Hi all,
Just a quick question. Today someone tried to travel to Paddington from Chippenham with a ticket from ‘Chippenham to West Drayton Not Via London’, and an Oyster that allows them free travel within the zones. Am I right in thinking they would have to change at Reading for a service that stopped at West Drayton? Similar to if they were split ticketing? Or is it different when using tickets in conjunction with Oyster?

Cheers

With that combination the train merely has to pass through the station where you switch from one ticket to another.

National Rail Conditions of Travel:
14.2 If you are using a Season Ticket, daily Zonal Ticket, or another area based Ticket such as a concessionary pass, ranger or rover in conjunction with another Ticket and the last station at which one Ticket is valid and the first station that the other Ticket is valid are the same, then the train does not need to call at that station for your combination to be valid.

It's because of the fact that the ticket which is held on their Oyster card is a zonal product (i.e. it's presumably valid from Zones 1-6 for example) that they do not have to stop at the point they change from one ticket (paper) to the other (Oyster) - see Condition 14.1 of the National Rail Conditions of Travel. Since they have a Zonal ticket on their Oyster they also do not need to tap in (which would obviously be impossible on a non-stopping split anyway!).

If the "Travelcard" were held in paper format it would work exactly the same way - just here it's held on an Oyster card. There are other differences between holding a zonal ticket on paper or on Oyster but they are not necessarily relevant for this scenario.

When you are splitting just with normal singles and returns then that's when you would have stop at each station you split at. But if you used, for example, a season ticket plus another single ticket, then you wouldn't have to stop at your split point.

That is a valid combination

No
Similar to if they were split ticketing?
They were using a combination of two or more tickets to make their journey (colloquially known as "split ticketing")

In this particular case there is no need for the train to call anywhere
Or is it different when using tickets in conjunction with Oyster?
It's not because of the medium.

It's because one of the tickets is treated as a Zonal Season ticket.
