Christmas Buses

As ever at this time of year I'm interested in where one can get buses over the holidays. Mainly where is there anything on Christmas day? Where I running extra buses on late new year's eve? Where is surprisingly poor on Boxing/New year's day.

I'll start with Christmas day: Lothian, very good network, Southern Vectis, very good network, Stagecoach Oxford, once an hour on route 1.

All of the above running good night service on new year's ev.

West Yorkshire has a reasonable 1-2 bph Boxing Day service on major routes (and the odd surprising minor route like the short runs on the 66):

This leads me to having an odd situation - buses on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but none on New Year's Day (despite the trains running on that day).

Leeds hasn't had New Year's Eve late buses for many years.

Stagecoach Oxford are also running an hourly Oxford Tube service on Christmas Day.
Several Go South Coast subsidaries are running Christmas services. Morebus has an hourly m1/m2 special service, with the m1 running to Royal Bournemouth Hospital and the m2 running to Christchurch. Buses run every 30 minutes between Bournemouth and Poole. Bluestar has a special hourly 18 service and a 2-hourly 1X service. The 18 is extended from Millbrook to the General Hospital, Aldermoor Road and Lordshill, whilst the 1X runs like the 2 to Eastleigh then to Chandler's Ford and Winchester.

It’s not so bad this year for those living in rural areas and on other routes where buses do not run on Sundays or Bank Holidays. With Christmas falling midweek it’s only two days, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, without buses. A few years ago when Christmas Day fell on a Saturday we had no buses after 6pm on Christmas Eve and then the following 4 days as Monday and Tuesday were also Bank Holidays. Then we had another 3 days without buses over the New Year Holiday.

In pretty much the whole North Scotland region there's no bus services at all on Christmas Day and New Years Day, although the Aberdeen Airport JET727 operates half hourly on new years.

The rest of the period is mostly a Saturday Service with buses finishing around 22:30 on Xmas Eve. Boxing Day and the 2nd January see a Sunday Service, With normal service resuming on the 3rd. There are a few exceptions on certain routes, but that's a basic rundown!

The last buses at least seem reasonable. In West Yorkshire buses start shutting down rather earlier, with last buses between 1800 and 2000 on routes that normally finish between 2200 and 2400.

That's quite poor, for my local route it's a solid 15 minute frequency up to the last departure from town at 22:22. New Years Eve is just a standard Saturday Service so i get a 15 minute frequency up to 00:22. The only downside is a lack of night services on New Years Eve.

Go Ahead are running their services to Heathrow and Gatwick on 25 December, so no real point in the Tube diverting. I think the same situation applied in 2017

Metrobus are running their Fastway 10 between Gatwick and Bewbush at a 30 minute frequncy (hourly overnight) on Christmas Day.

I am thinking the 10 from Bewbush to Gatwick Airport must be the longest running continuous bus service in the UK. It has been running non stop 24/7 for years. Every year it has run on Christmas Day and even all night long on the 24th/25th night and the 25th/26th night.

Normal Sunday service in most of Europe. I'll be getting a VRR day ticket for the Rhein-Ruhr region on 25 December.

National Express and Megabus are running a skeleton network on Christmas Day. Some routes are reasonably frequent (every 2-3 hours).

In the East Midlands there are no Christmas Day buses and not much in the way of Boxing Day buses as well. trentbarton are running a full service on Boxing Day (except 20, Skylink Clifton and Amberline) and NCTX are running special timetables on most routes. Surprisingly Arriva in Derby are not running on Boxing Day unlike previous years where a full daytime service ran.

What a disparate bunch!

It's interesting to see the different approach to fares that's been adopted, from entirely free of charge through normal fares to the more 'market forces' arrangement i.e. sting 'em for all you can get! Seriously, I can understand National Express and, perhaps, the airport coach operators charging a premium fare, especially given the hours of operation, but local bus services don't lend themselves to this imo. Interesting too that Go-ahead want to charge premium fares in Hampshire and Dorset but are happy with the usual fares on the Isle of Wight! A case of what you can get away with in one area but possibly not another, even adjacent?

Stagecoach East (Cambridge, Peterborough, Bedford and Huntingdon) are going with their usual plans for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day, which is running no services at all on all three days. The funny thing is, even if they ran something like a Sunday/bank holiday service on any of these three days, where I live I'd still get no service as they axed the Sunday/bank holiday runs for Bedford Route 72 over a year ago.

That said I suspect that the majority of companies could stick something out to do a afternoon run round their relevant town, city or whatever to serve the hospitals, maybe even using volunteers, making it free to travel and having a charity box on the front. From experience there are always staff in a depot who wold be disposed to drive services like that.

Though, presumably, payment from local authorities will be calculated as a proportion of those premium fares.

In the Lake District Stagecoach are running a normal Sunday service on Boxing Day.
Surprisingly on New Year's day the only service is an hourly 599 service running between Bowness & Ambleside (1st morning service starts from Kendal and last evening service returns to Kendal) with a gap at lunchtime so looks like it is only 1 bus operating.

H1 is the old 118 New Brighton-Mill Park, H2 & H3 are the old 194/195 St Helens-Whiston Circulars, these routes were withdrawn as part of Merseytravel network reviews, the St Helens 194/195 withdrawn 2016, Wirral 118/119 withdrawn in 2017.
