Class 08 Whistles and Horns.

Hello does anyone know what did class 08s have when they were built? Horns or Whistles?
Because some have whistles and some have horns. What did they first have? Horns or Whistles?

Is the horn a BR(S) thing? Both 09s I’ve had experience with had horns.

Earlier classes such as D3/7s and later BR class 11s were fitted with whistles driven off the air brake compressors I believe.

I don't know. I would have thought so. But a few 08s have whistles so I wonder what they were built with.

Various photographs over the years depict 08's with whistles, but some seem to have been converted to horns. I believe the 09's were built similarly, but I've only seen them fitted with horns.

So they must have been built with whistles.

I can't say for certain, but it may be a possibility they were. Southern DEMU's were also built with air whistles, but converted to horns during their careers.

All 08s I’ve worked with at work (BR(w)) had whistles. Perhaps some of those that were allocated to BR(s) were changed to horns?

The 08s my dad worked with in Salisbury when he worked for BR had horns.

Way back in the 80s, one Inverness 08 was fitted with a class 26 horn (externally), sounded very odd.

But plenty of other 08s that have a regular height have horns. When my dad worked as a guard for BR in Salisbury, all the 08s he worked with had horns. He was certain of that. There are some 08s with regular height on heritage railways that have horns.

I had a look at pictures of 09s and I found one with a whistle. Numbered 09017.
