Hi

Has anybody seen how the class 142s are getting old and rusty and are not very pleasent to travel on, and there have a lot of mechanical problems with them. Also the seats are very low down and there is not much room onboard the trains.

The class 142 are going tho be replaced with a new tram way system on the Penistone Line.

Yep I have to agree that the 142s are quite disgusting.
They do provide a lot of seats on the though. I suppose it's better to have more trains that are in a bad condition than none at all.
Hopefully they will be replaced within the next 10 years.

Currently the 3 diagrams on the Penistone Line are for a 144/2, 144/3 and a 150/1. The 158 diagram hasn't been present since December.

I've not seen the 144/3 for a couple of weeks now and I catch what its scheduled for 4-5 times a week. Had a 150 in its place one day but other than that its been a 142 which has made for a rather squashed journey home from Sheffield. Have there been a few problems with the 144s or have I just been rather unlucky?

Also on the tram-train thing, has anything been announced as to whats happening at Huddersfield, Barnsley, Wombwell, Elsecar, Chapeltown, Meadowhall and Sheffield as regards platform height if these replacements are meant to be able to run on the Supertram network as well?

the are rubbish but are cheap to run

Not from the point of view of hireage, ROSCOs are still charging around £180,000pa
Not from the point of view of failures, they cause more delay minutes than similar 144 2-cars
Not from the point of view of insurance pay-outs, drivers are still being awarded compensation for there appalling seating
Not from the point of view of safety of the line incidents, 142s are involved in more SPADS & station over runs than any other class

Yes, they are rubbish, but theres nothing else.

There should be a 150 out on 09/12/1513/1756/2018 departures from Hudds but it is often substitued dependant on whether it makes it over from Manchester the night before, it often doesn't. The availability of the 3 cars has been altered a bit due to the 2 cars being repainted (only 1 left to do) and no doubt will be altered when the 3 cars go to paint shop which is expected within the next couple of weeks.

As for adjustments to platform levels there hasn't been any news recently which is concerning as the start date is only 12 months away.

They are defenatly planning to run across the Supertram Network so commuters can go as far as Halfway (at the end of the line) to Huddersfield via Sheffield

Not in the first phase they aren't. That would only happen in around 2014-2015 at the earliest if the initial two year trial starting 2010 was successful.

I've done a 142 from Newcastle - Carlisle. It was bloomin awful. Would have preferred a 156 that morning ;)

Yesterday I caught the Sheffield - Adwick train it was delayed by 40 mins because it would not start at all in the end the Northern Rail mechanics came out and the train then started but it was so late that half of the passengers caught another train. It ended up being 50 mins late in Doncaster and Adwick.

Done a 142 from Newcastle to Carlisle, then another one from Carlisle to Carnforth via the coast, then another one from Carnforth to Leeds... All in one day I hasten to add!! To complete my round trip I also had a 185 from Northallerton to Newcastle, a 158 from Leeds to York, and a 91+mk4s York to Northallerton! All done on a North Country Rover.

I dont think the Ex FNW are that bad in comparison to the Merseyrail and ATN Ones they have decent enough seating and arent that bad a ride... ok they may be old in the tooth but they where only designed to alst 10 YEARS! so clearly they must be doing good keeping so few of them out of Barnsley.

As a former resident of Retford, I used to use the Northern service between there and either Sheffield or Lincoln on quite a regular basis (including the first train of the day towards Lincoln at 06:10am for quite a time) and I personally would say I incurred more delays at the hands of 153s and 156s than from Pacer units of either 142 or 144 variety.

Maybe I was just unlucky? On the other hand, I did once manage to get on the wrong Lincoln bound train at Doncaster and found myself on an ex-FNW Pacer for around two hours (allowing for a delayed crew change at Sheffield), even the local buses around here have done away with those old style bench seats!

Why is it that apart from the class 180's why do Northern end up with the dog ends of the DMU's?

Northern are doing absolute wonders with their fleet. One only has to step aboard a refurbished 158 to realise that. The 142's are also in superb condition in Northern spec. I think Northern have shown the railway world that the 142 can be ok if a little time and attention is spent on it. A lot of the unfriendly fire the 142 takes seems to me to be as a result of many years of poor maintenance and bad experiences. Yes, they are a bit ropey. Yes, they are a bit rough around the edges and yes, I would probably agree that the 142 is long overdue replacement. BUT, at Northern especially, the pacer has been proven to be a worthy and valiant worker.

I'm not blaming Northern for there stock, its not up to them.
They do the best they can with it.

Where did you pick up that gem...?

I have never read anywhere that the Pacers were designed for such a limited life, and nor would I have expected BR to shell out for so many of them if they were only going to last a decade.
