Hi, I’m wanting to take my lad up to York to see the national railway museum in York in Feb. I’d love to ride with him on a Class 91/Mk4 set before they are retired, But how can I make sure the service I book is planned to be a 91?

I have looked at https://live.rail-record.co.uk which lists a number of 91 services, but that doesn’t match with the LNER website which seems to be all Azumas.

Thanks in advance!

The timing load is not necessarily a good indicator of which services might be 91 services. Any service that is formed of a 91 needs to be part of a diagram that is out and back from Neville Hill and definitely not one that goes to any of the Hitachi depots.

Diagrams may be changed at weekends in the light of engineering work requirements. For example, the 0906 service looks good for the next two Saturdays but the following week, the service is planned differently.

Would an easier option be to use a 91 on a Leeds service and change at Doncaster or Leeds for the final part of the journey to York?

You can use the LNER website to work out what you might get, but set swaps are common. They are more common to Leeds.

Plan the booking at LNER's website and check the information page for each service - it will either show "LNER Azuma" or "Electric train", the latter being Mk 4 sets. It's not a guarantee, but it's reliable if there's not a set swap.

The 0833 from King's Cross (change Doncaster or Leeds) is a possibility, as is the 1645 from Leeds (1718 Doncaster) on the return.
