Hi,

I am considering the possibility of commuting from Exeter to Bristol for work but have no idea what it is like.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who does the journey regularly now, how they find it, whether or not it is possible to get a seat on the quicker trains, is the service reliable etc. I have commuted into London for years but this would be a longer commute than i have taken before.

I would be grateful for any insights.

many thanks

Firstly welcome along to the forum.
I don't commute on that journey, but I often travel between Tiverton Parkway and Bristol Temple Meads, the earliest I've done it recently is 10:30 so I can't comment on how busy it is, although I would expect it would be pretty busy, I expect you should generally still find a seat though.
Most of the trains are quick services by the way, with nearly all trains taking around 65 minutes.
I have encountered very few delays on this journey, it seems to be top notch now.
It's certainly a hell of a lot better than doing the journey by car...

Hope this helps, Tim.

I don't commute on that route (in fact I live several hundred miles away) however a quick look at the timetable suggests that all services between Exeter St Davids and Bristol Temple Meads are reservable. So in terms of getting a seat it would be possible to get a free seat reservation on a specific service to and from Bristol (even if you have a season ticket rather than a normal ticket), also remember that even if you hold a seat reservation that doesn't tie you to a specific train it just means if you travel on a different train you won't have a reserved seat.

Something to think about perhaps?

The peak trains back from Bristol are very busy. The 1544, 1644, 1744 and 1844 services out of Bristol are all usually full and standing as far as Taunton. You'll be lucky to get a seat if you catch one of those services. Going towards Bristol you should be OK, as the biggest number of people seem to board at Taunton.
