It's Been A While!

about a few months ago i watched some videos of the 508s in service filmed around about 2006 i think and it came to my attention that Smitham was announced on the tannoy by that automatic male voice that SER use at Charing Cross and Cannon Street and i waa wondering if anyone has anything on it? because it's really irritating me that i cannot find anything anywhere about it

it would be very appreciated if you did!
(there was also a moment in the video where they ran between East Croydon and London Bridge like they do now with Southern Thakeslink and London Overground)

Are you sure it was the same voice? What year roughly was this video? To clarify was this the announcement at Smitham (Coulsdon Town)? Or was it at another station announcing a train to Smitham (Coulsdon Town)?

Smitham (Coulsdon Town) is currently Anne and Matt but up until a few years ago it was Celia Drummond and Phil Sayer who did all the announcements here. Celia Drummond and Phil Sayer would have been used from the early 2000s up until 2018.

The male voice you are referring to at Cannon Street and Charing Cross is Rob (a Southeastern employee) but he is on the Atos Worldline system and as far as i am aware the Atos Worldline system was never used at Smitham (Coulsdon Town) until 2018. Gatwick Airport did have Rob throughout the 2000s and early 2010s but that was the only one.

If you are referring to the announcements at London Bridge announcing a train to Smitham (Coulsdon Town) then it probably was Rob as he is also at London Bridge and also at many Southeastern stations now.

Used to live in Coulsdon. Trains from smitham went to Waterloo East and charing Cross.

I never knew SouthEastern 508s ever working to Smitham/Coulsdon Town... Thought they just spun past on their way to Redhill and Tonbridge....

They didn't. They went, as you say, via Redhill

Smitham was re-named Coulsdon Town in May 2011 which reflected more the position of the station.

More the case the area known as Coulsdon' moved over the last 150 years. The name of 'Smitham' was appropriate when the station opened, and the station hasn't moved.
