I wonder if anyone out there has a list of vehicles present at this Crewe Works Open Day which they would be willing to dig out. I went to the open day which was on 4th July 1987 but no longer have my notes.

I would also like to know the identity of the maroon and cream support coach which was in the main exhibition area (could it have been 21256?). No luck with my internet searches.

Thanks in advance if anyone can assist.

I was there; if I took a photo of that carriage I'll have the number. Will try to check over the weekend. Should still have my notes somewhere as well.

Thanks Peter, that could be a big help. I have an issue of Rail Enthusiast from that year which gives a supposed list of exibits, but then on another page in their Works Report section it gives another list for that same day with an additional 8 locos including 37673 and 37416 which I'm pretty sure had left by then, so I can't entirely trust either list. The coach isn't mentioned anywhere.

Thanks also Vectra33, yes there are many photos on the net of the day (would be more if I could get fotopic to work), and that has helped to confirm a lot, though there are quite a few locos which nobody seemed to photograph no doubt due to poor positioning.

Well, if I have a photo of it that will prove the number.

But if I didn't do a photo of it then I'm afraid it'll be just a list of carriages in my notes somewhere... literally just that, a list of the numbers and not which was in which livery! Perhaps understandably I was concentrating on the masses of condemned 40s and early AC electrics on that particular open day....

I'm pretty sure it was the only coach in the Works so if you have a coach number in with your works notes that should be it. I guess it was the support coach for Princess Elizabeth or Duke of Gloucester. It's not their current support coach which they appear to have had since about 1993. Thanks again.

Thanks for checking Peter.

Dave, thanks that's a website I haven't seen before, and the loco list agrees in most respects with one of the lists printed in Rail Enthusiast magazine so that helps. There are a couple of interesting anomalies with the webiste list though, it doesn't mention 47405 which I know was there as I have a photo of it, also it doesn't mention 37245 which was also there and had one cab accident damaged. (The website states 37244 which I'm pretty sure wasn't there, so likely it's a typo for 37245).

So I think I've got a pretty accurate list now, the only loco I'm unsure of is 47191 which is stated on one list I've seen, but I think it arrived on works after the open day having been withdrawn, and of course there's still that mystery coach!

So it was 21256, many thanks for that.

For the record, present that day were:

37002/011/519(ex 027)/032/520(ex 041)/705(ex 060)/068/073/669(ex 129)/892(ex 149)/891(ex 166)/168(to 890)/670(ex 182)/689(ex 195)/199/204/233(to 889)/893(ex 237)/245/294 40008/020/028/044/057/058/088/091/104/115/139/155/195 45053 47001/089/230/275/282/405/409/414/429/433/437/464/468/486/524 50011 56049/067/068/090/095 81015/022 84008 85001/039 86206/211/225/226/243/429 87019 90001-007(from nearly complete to frames laid) 91001(frame & bulkheads) 40122 D1041 D5054 D9000

Steam 3020 "Cornwall", 6201 "Princess Elizabeth", 48151, 71000 "Duke of Gloucester".

Plus internal users 024320 and 024454 and we now know support coach 21256.
