I often hear this working passing through Alfreton and have seen it occasionally, very impressive train fully loaded with 40 Tesco's containers (and also recently has been a vey noisy 68!). But why does it work Tees Dock - Daventry out, but Daventry - Doncaster I Port arrive 1633, then apparently form an 18.20 to Tees Dock on the return? What happens in that time at I Port?

The service links the Tesco distribution centres at Daventry, Doncaster and Teesport.

Any traffic from Daventry destined for Doncaster is unloaded there, any traffic for Teesport stays onboard and any traffic that happens to be moving between Doncaster and Teesport can be loaded for the short journey. Of course, anything returning from Doncaster to Daventry must take the ‘long’ route via the north east.

Thanks for that, must be a pretty slick operation at Doncaster. Do you know how long it's been a 68 working?

Are there any other services that pull into a terminal, get containers transferred then resume their journey in a relative short space of time, just 1 hr 31min from arrival to departure ?

I doubt it, but it is a concept worth considering. Taking the WCML as an example. It is a long way from the nearest terminals in Manchester/Liverpool to the next ones in the Scottish central belt.

A simple hard standing at Kingmoor, serviced by a reach stacker MAY be viable. With just one train daily to/from each of the major southern ports calling, perhaps it could work, who knows.
