I have done a couple for other jobs in the past so maybe able to help. What kind of things is It asking?

What role this for btw. I am waiting to hear back for the Manchester Driver role.

I’ve not heard of this test before? Previously I’ve passed Verbal and Numeric Reasoning tests for conductor role. Have they dropped one of the others in favour of this Deductive Reasoning test?

Do Northern not require you to live within 45 min drive? I know some don’t mind relocation..

What kind of things are they asking on the test and Ill see if I can help? One technique is learned of the is to dissect the big question into lots of little ones but there are so many variations of these tests.

Yes still require 45 minutes as far as I know. I think it really strict to help narrow everything down people. so if its not 45 minutes according to google maps you won't get through.

Ive never understood if its peak or non peak times. Could anyone clarify that

Not sure about peak or off peak etc. It could even be done by computer during the initial sift and you could be unlucky that it checks during a busier time!? I’m just guessing but I applied for a role last year that is 45 mins away during off peak times and it failed me almost instantly but when the job was reposted I applied again with exactly the same application and it went through... Railway recruitment is a bit of a lottery at times I feel.

Are you not in London, hence my query re travel time/relocation etc?

.....

Does anyone know if they accept an application for employment if you live outside of 45 minutes from your chosen depot but you’re willing to relocate. Unfortunately very few depots near me.

Unlikely. I’m 39 minutes and they were a little concerned by this at my interview”

Seen that last week just copied it across. 45 is usually the max ideally less i would say.

Does anyone know if they measure it in peak times or off-peak. My understanding is its only first group that allow relocation as well.

Manda I wouldnt worry about it

It is out of your control, and have no idea if you will be within the 45
Its a long process

At a 39 minute commute for myself, they expressed a little concern but also said I wouldn’t rarely be driving in rush hour as you would be driving a train in either morning or afternoon “rush hour” they were also concerned incase a motorway was closed / bad traffic etc.. I just said I’d always aim to be at work 20/30 mins early. They said they don’t want you late onboard and departing. They also don’t want you on a long commute home if you end up being at work for 12 hours. So yes I believe they will be strict on this.

Did you get anywhere with the test you originally asked about? Presume you have had to do it by now? Was it hard?

Not to interview but I already work for Northern and some colleagues were saying some people will get calls for interviews shortly then coronavirus happened.

So are you saying that you did the tests for a conductor position and passed them, then applied for another conductor position but haven’t been invited to test?? If so, is it not likely that your test results will be on file and have carried you through already, assuming they are in date?

Hi no I have emailed them regarding the tests because they were part of the old system. It could be an error because I think a computer does the initial sifts and they may have my old address on record as I have moved. I hopefully will be able to sort this tomorrow and may come back into the running it is just dependent on which way they will look at it.

Just to clarify the two tests Northern are currently supposed to be using for Conductor applicants are:

Numeric Reasoning
and
Verbal Reasoning

There shouldn't be a deductive reasoning test appearing on the SHL system for conductor applicants, there is one available for SHLs customers to purchase, but that is probably a mistake for conductor jobs, it's far, far more difficult.

Yes this is true as
I've been asked to complete numerical and verbal reasoning tests for the conductor roles for Northern.

I passed the numerical and verbal reasoning tests last December but was told in February that the vacancy was being withdrawn due to the franchise takeover. I have since applied for another conductor role at Wigan. Does anyone know whether my test results will remain live or will I have to do them again?
