I have a couple of questions relating to this journey:

Edinburgh to Manchester Stations 30 Nov TPE service depart 1412
Manchester Oxford Road to Edinburgh TPE 2 Dec ~1630

I did catch the first train which was delayed and due to that delay I went to Piccadilly instead of Oxford Road as intended and I'm pretty sure according to my watch the train was over 30 minutes late at the point it stopped moving in Piccadilly. The webiste On Time Trains is showing the delays as 30 minutes and 26 minutes for the manchester stops which does not seem right unless the picadily time is calculated on some other arrival time. Can someone confirm the time that would be used for any DR claim?

On the return, a colleague said the train was cancelled and hence we decided to leave our meeting early and get the earlier TPE service around 1430 from Oxford road in order to be sure we did not get to Edinburgh significantly late. We did notice other alternatives we could have used part-route were also cancelled. I take it at this point we pretty much gave up the possibility of any compensation and I have no idea what time we would have arrived at. This does not compare favourably with compensation schemes for air travel where departure one hour ealier than booked also yields compensation (I do appreciate that one would need to receive advice from 'the railway' on what to do given disruption even if such a scheme existed and that we did not experience any significant delay on the service we did take.)

My ticket was off-peak return any route via Carlisle with seat reservations on trains above.

(sorry if this is the wrong section, I see DR questions in multiple places)

(posts merged here....)

It seems I might have not understood how the searches work (for the first part of the above) as these OnTimeTrains results are different.

You had the right to take an earlier train, but were under no obligation to do so. You chose to take it and were not delayed, so there's no claim there.

Sometimes you have a choice between avoiding a delay or being delayed and getting compensation; the 'right' choice will vary from person to person and by circumstance.

You are looking at departure times, if you switch the option to arrival times it shows them as 30 and 29 minutes respectively.
