I have booked a journey with LNER from Newcastle to London for 27th November at 07:55 and noticed it is going to take about 4 hours.

The LNER website mentions diversions between Peterborough and Doncaster, but i am just curious to know more. My wife and I haven't been on a train for well over 20 years and to London in over 30 years, so we are looking forward to the trip.

She'll be 60 (but don't tell anybody) :)

The itinerary for the journey is here.

As you will see, it runs normally to Doncaster (on electric), then switches to diesel to run via Gainsborough, Lincoln and Spalding, before a fast run on electric from Peterborough to Kings Cross.

With bi-mode units, this is a whole lot easier than it was before to use electric on the normal route and diesel on the diversion.

Many thanks

I'll keep that link handy, then I can look at it during the journey.

Or an extended wait at Doncaster whilst they attach a 67 on the front and drag the electric sets to Peterborough.

It was fun though. I did it in 2018?? when it happened a lot more, but IIRC in 2019 it only happened once or twice a day.

While that happened in the past, it is very unlikely to ever happen again. Not really relevant to this thread.

You mentioned the current situation comparatively to what happened in the past. I was expanding on what happened in the past, therefore it is relevant.
