I'm going to be in Alton today to attend a book and map fair and I'm thinking of travelling on the Watercress line.

I know it has gift shops but does it have any second hand bookshops at any of it's stations?

I hope you enjoy your trip in spite of the rather gloomy weather in this part of Hampshire.

I no longer live close to the Watercress Line but I' think there was a 2nd hand bookshop along Alresford high street (a five minutes walk from Alresford station). My memory is rather rusty on that and another forum member might be better able to assist.

There certainly was at Alresford. Out the station, down the road to the high street, quick right and then left into the square. About six shops down on the left. Lawrence Oxley Ltd. Picture Framers and second hand books.

Lawrence Oxley Ltd in Alresford is seemingly not normally open on a Sunday. Here's what you're likely to be missing...

Thanks for the info. I found some stations had a few books for sale. I didn't alight at Ropley as in doing so I would have got less time on the steam hauled service and more time on the diesel one.

I decided to alight at Medstead and Four Marks as I wanted to see the quieter station and go for a short walk. My walk consisted of visiting an off licence and a Tesco local. Better than nothing.

I did pick up some old copies of The Railway Magazine at Alresford station though. Rescued from a skip. There were others but the person couldn't rescue them all so they got junked. These are from the 1930s so there may be no market for old railway magazines now.

They tried to sell some in the shop but no one was interested. I occasionally see them in second-count bookshops.
.
My interest in second-hand book shops at heritage railways is that they might have old staff handbooks and timetables.

Oops, apologies all round. My only excuse is retirement makes the days blur a bit. . Will check the day in future. Hopefully others may find the information useful.
