Bit of an odd ball question here. I am a frequent user of the GWR mainline, HS1, the South Western mainline and South Eastern. A few years ago when I used the Caledonian sleeper for the first time, I noticed a particular "whirring" type noise from the ? Track ? Wheels as it was travelling at high speed which I was sure I had not heard on other lines. This was confirmed on two later trips on the sleeper.
I have recently used an Avanti pendolino to Liverpool and again heard the same "whirring" type noise seemingly coming from track level at high speed.
Having today used my usual GWR and South Eastern HS1 trains, I am certain they don't make the same sort of whirring noise from the wheels when running at high speed.
Am I imagining this ? If not, is it something to do with the Avanti and Caledonian sleeper bogies ? The WCML track ? Vehicle sound proofing ?
