Has anyone riden the EC trains (two each way per day) between Munich and Zurich that are booked to be double headed class 218?

Any info or comments would be appreciated.

Yes I have, however it is 4 trains each way, 1 of which in each direction goes via Kempten the others via Memmingen. The 218s only haul it between Munich & Lindau however. The service uses 'air con' SBB stock, quite nice to travel on.

Loads of times.

As Chester025 says, they are formed of Swiss air-con stock though I have occasionally seen "fresh air" stock on these during busy times (DB "IR" coaches or older Swiss stock). Locos are always Mühldorf 218/4s, mostly in pairs but single ones are not totally unknown. Loco diagrams can be found on the V160 website though you have to register to get them via the "Mitglieder" button on the top right.

The Austrian / Swiss leg of the trip is hauled by an SBB Cargo Re4/4, see this picture passing Rorschach

Love travelling on either route, both pretty scenic - I can't comment on fares as I have always used a pass of some sort or other, but expect that there could well be some cheap advance fares available via the DB website if you book far enough in advance and can commit to a certain train.

Many of the local DB Regio services are 218 hauled in this area. I prefer these because you can open the window and really appreciate the diesel-hydraulic sound. For only 21 Euro single (or 29 Euro for a group of up to 5) you can use the Bayern Landerticket for a day (after 9am on weekdays, all day at weekends). Based on Buchloe I covered most of the 218 routes, e.g. München - Lindau, Augsburg - Oberstdorf. Buchloe is also great for some parallel 218 departures - check the timetable.

Not for much longer though, usually the Munich - Fussens & the Augsburg - Hergatz/Lindau and vice versa cross there. However from June the Augsburg - Hergatz/Lindau trains should be units. But then again Emmelshausen was supposed to go over to karts in December '09, and its still running! (well until this Friday!)

Augsburg-Lindau trains that I've used in the past year have been units.

The majority of the Augsburg - Hergatz (some extended to Lindau) via Memmingen are booked 218s.

Diagrams available on: http://www.v160.de/ However you will need an account to view them.

They are (all?) MTU4000 power unit fitted ones on double deck stock, so even more rubbish than the "loud" ones you can get on the Kempton circuits.

Other way round isn't it? My list from last June shows that 10/24 Muhldorf allocation are 'real' TB10/11 and that only 3/21 of the Kempten ones are real.
