I rolled up to Manchester Piccadilly last night to get back to Cheadle Hulme about 1850. The next 3 Northern trains were cancelled with the next one at 2006. Quelle surprise!

So plan B into operation - next train to Stockport and catch a bus. The next train was the delayed 1843 Norwich , due 1858, which interestingly was shown as Platform 8. There were already 2 trains in 8, a 2 coach Northern Unit and a TPE185. But it's not unusual to have 3 trains stacked in 8 and I wandered up the platform where lots of passengers were waiting.

I assumed that the Norwich was going from 8 as it was being terminated at Picc due to late running and was just looking to see where it was when there was an announcement that the next train in Platform 8 was indeed the Norwich and helpfully added that the train was between Deansgate and Oxford Rd! Those of you know the layout at Picc will know that 8 is one of the terminating platforms with 13/14 being the through platforms for the lines from Oxford Rd, so to get to 8 the train would have to pass through 13/14 and then reverse ...

I was on the footbridge at this time so went to 13 where the next train was showing as the 1904 to the airport. I approached the NR bloke on the platform to speak to him, but had to wait as he was dealing with a passenger requiring assistance. When I did get to speak to him, I told him the screens were wrong and the Nottm train was coming into 13 and was now at Oxford Road. He looked at his phone and said no - there's nothing at Oxford Road, but within 30 seconds the 4 coach 158 arrived at Platform 13!

Cue information screens being changed when the train was at the Platform but it still required the train guard to make an announcement that this was not the airport train and several passengers alighted again. I was on the train by then, so I didn't hear an announcement of the platform change on the station if there was one. But getting from p8-p13 in a minute or so would give few if any passengers a chance of catching it. I expect there were a few angry passengers as this was the last through service of the day.

So how can this happen? An auto announcement of platform 8 and saying the train is between Deansgate and Oxford Road? Somewhere something or somebody got it all horribly wrong.

Slightly off topic but I recently had to get to platform 13 in a rush, what a palaver! 13/14 may as well be in a different station. Signage unclear too when you get to the end of platform 10 (I think).

If you have come off a platform it probably isn’t the most obvious but if coming from inside the station there is big numbers above the doors normally with staff checking tickets and the escalators going up to 13,14.

Can be a nightmare if rushing for a train but the idea is to never be rushing and allow plenty of time where possible.

I'd have smelled a rat if the screens were showing platform 8 and checked Realtime Trains.

I did and was checking RTT when the announcement about the train being between Deansgate and Oxford Rd was made. It was about 5 minutes before the train came in.

I have however seen some Norwich trains starting at Piccadilly when there is disruption, so p8 was quite possible.

Yeah the signage to take me through the gate line (onto platform 10 I think it was) was fine to be fair I meant after then, you get to the bottom of the platform and the signage isn’t clear if it’s telling you to carry on down the platform or go up the stairs.

Do usually allow plenty of time, unfortunately the later train I planned to catch had been cancelled hence the rushing for that one.

You didn’t use the escalator right in front of you?

I don’t check the signage much as I know the station well but I’m pretty sure it points up.

10 right in front then 11,12 to your right with a wall beyond that so for me at least it’s fairly obvious to go up the escalator, but I grew up in Manchester so maybe easier said than done.

Right in front? Hmm I’m thinking I might have even over shot it now. I got onto platform 10 and easily over halfway down the platform and got to some stairs/escalators. There was a sign pointing at a 45 degree angle to one side for platform 13/14 but wasn’t clear if meant up the stairs or further down to one side (to what I realise now was 11/12). Maybe as I presumed once through the gate line your on platform level.

Could do with having a walk around when get more time, usually if I go into/out Piccadilly it’s from the midlands so just into a main platform. I do use trains going west quite often but usually pick them up from Oxford Road. Think it’s just that weird little extra bit I need to get my bearings with.
