Novirgintrains - epetition response
We received a petition asking:
“We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to stop Virgin Trains from putting jobs at risk at other companies.”
Details of Petition:
“In April 2008 Wrexham & Shropshire started running trains from Wrexham via Shrewsbury, Telford and Tame Bridge to London, a serice missing for over 30 years. Since then Virgin Trains have started a service from Wrexham and now propose a service to Shrewsbury, this puts 50 jobs in Wrexham at risk plus jobs at Wrexham & Shropshires suppliers in Wrexham and surrounding Shropshire. Virgin Trains should instead concentrate on the West Coast Main Line or lines with no direct link to London ie Blackpool.”

Thank you for passing me a copy of your petition regarding the direct rail services from London to Wrexham and London to Shrewsbury planned by Virgin Trains.
In early 2009, Virgin Trains did indeed propose the operation of two return services from Shrewsbury to London Euston on Mondays to Saturdays and one return service on Sundays. These services would have commenced in December 2009. The proposals were however withdrawn as Virgin Trains did not believe the business case to support these services was sufficiently strong. Virgin Trains currently have no plans to operate a London to Shrewsbury service.
Turing to Wrexham, Virgin Trains operate one return service to London Euston each weekday (no services at weekends). This service operates via Chester and Crewe, so serves a different market to that served by Wrexham & Shropshire. Virgin Trains currently have no plans to increase the Wrexham to London service frequency.
