Absolutely! In fact more than that, a Haydock Colleries branch split off from the BR network at the southern end of the triangle; bisected the triangle; and crossed the Liverpool - Manchester on a flat crossing just east of the main line platform and going to a colliery north-west of the town. Haydock Collieries locomotives used the branch and had running powers over BR metals to, I think, Dallam although I'm sure someone will correct me on that one.

The map attached dates from 1965.
