As the titles says, this is about the East Coast £9 fares.

In the next 6-8 weeks, I am relocating to Edinburgh for work purposes.

I only just came across this offer, so I thought I may as well take advantage.

My question: Can I use the weekend upgrade to first class with theses tickets? The site does mention this:

No upgrades or further discounts, including Railcard, child or online discounts, can be applied.

Any help will be appreciated.

I think so, subject to space being available. some TOCs disallow WF on Advance tickets , eg XC do, but guards allowed us on trains that had plenty of capacity. guards generally apply more common sense than management ;)

It appears anyone can upgrade.

Weekend First – East Coast

Holders of all valid Standard tickets and passes can travel in extra comfort on EC services on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays in First Class accommodation labelled "Weekend First", on payment of the relevant supplement.

For the avoidance of doubt, this includes “Advance” tickets, Off-Peak Day tickets, Rail Rovers, BritRail, Railcard-reduced tickets and Staff Passes.

Passengers purchase a supplement on the train (for that train only) subject to availability of accommodation. Please note Weekend First cannot be booked at stations.

Weekend First issued for travel on other TOCs cannot be used on EC trains, and EC Weekend First cannot be issued through to non-EC destinations.

Weekend First supplements are:

East Coast (ECC) Zone 1
London/Stevenage – Wakefield/York and north thereof
£25·00

East Coast (ECC) Zone 2
London/Stevenage – Hull, Brough, Selby and all stations south of York and Wakefield
£20·00

East Coast (ECC) Zone 3
all non-London EC journeys i.e. starting and ending at Peterborough or north thereof
£20·00

Seems odd that they'd turn down that much extra (given the original ticket price) for an upgrade if you asked on the day. If there are seats there, why not fill them?
