I noticed 3 class 60`s and 2 class 66`s parked up at Edge Hill over the weekend, on the former MPD site. I presume they are collecting coal from Liverpool Docks, are they still running to Fiddlers Ferry, and if so how often do they run these days?

The coal traffic from Gladstone Dock to Fiddlers finished a few years ago. Those locos will probably have been for the biomass traffic from Liverpool Docks to Drax Power Station.

Ah thanks, I thought so, so which route will they take to Drax, Calder Valley line?

Via Earlestown, Warrington Bank Quay, Hartford curve, Northwich, Altrincham, Stockport, Denton Junction, Ashton Moss North Junction, Brewery curve, Rochdale, Calder Valley. The train would need a banker if it went via Manchester Victoria and Network Rail no longer allow banking up Miles Platting bank.

These sidings also deal with stone traffic between Harrisons at Shap and Ashton in Makerfield

So that's why, I presume, westbound, the empties go via Manchester Victoria and Chat Moss - they don't need a banker! Any idea why NR doesn't permit banking up Miles Platting? Do they permit banking anywhere?

They probably dont allow banking at Manchester Victoria because the 1998 resignalling didn't allow for it.

Although how many of those were from dodgy folk buying a ticket to Edge Hill to get through the barriers at Lime Street ;)
There's also an easement allowing doubleback via Lime St. It's therefore slightly cheaper for a lot of people to buy to Edge Hill and start/stop short at Lime St.

Can I point out an error in the OP without trying to be too picky? I think the locos would have been seen stabled at Tuebrook Sidings, just outside Edge Hill station. Edge Hill Motive Power Depot (8A) was located a good half mile to the east on the south side of the L&M line and the site is now part of Wavertree Technology Park, with that station a bit further on.

Yes it was at the side of the technology park, I visited Edge Hill MPD around 10 times in the 60`s, the old mind has dimmed a bit since those days, the arches suggested the location to me, it was a great depot back in the day, many thanks for the input.
