I’m travelling from Paddington to Ipswich this weekend. My intention was to use the Elizabeth Line from Paddington to Shenfield, changing there for other trains heading towards Ipswich.

What type of ticket do I need ?

Would a ticket from London Terminals to Ipswich suffice ?

It would, but it's somewhat cheaper if you split at Manor Park. TrainSplit (or the forum's ticket site) can sell you the combination. I was wrong about the first bit, see other comments.

I think you could get even cheaper by using Oyster/contactless between Paddington and Manor Park, but you'd have to leave the train to tap out then reenter with your ticket to Ipswitch.

Also, note that there's rail replacement busses on part of the GA route from Shenfield to Ipswitch this Sunday.

No it would not. The OP would need a ticket from zone U1 to Ipswich - valid for a single leg on the underground (which is what the Elizabeth line counts as in ticketing terms between Paddington and Whitechapel).

No. A London Terminals ticket can't be used through Central London to access terminals on the other side of London (Paddington, St Pancras, Liverpool Street and City Thameslink are the final valid stations for a London Terminals ticket on the National Rail network). In this case you need a through ticket from a station on the other side of London, or a U1 ticket (as Underground tickets are valid on the Elizabeth line), and you should compare the price of both options and your need to decide which one you want.

Possibly might be better off changing at Stratford for the Norwich slow rather than Shenfield for another train?

Would suggest Liverpool Street and the Norwich fast but it’s quite a walk from the Elizabeth line to the National Rail High Level platforms!

You’ll want a London Underground Zone 1 to Ipswich ticket - Greater Anglia also sell these as Advances at decent fares.
