EMR 10 Car Unreserved Sections

Hi everyone,
Trying to book two tickets tomorrow on 08:55 Derby to STP however I am not able to get a seat reservation. Would anyone know which carriages are unreserved in a 10 car formation please?

Usually but not always the middle car in each 5-car set, so C and J (I think).

Quite a few sources are saying it used to be C but now it's D (which would presumably mean D and K on a 10-coach service). However, there are also claims that this is not always the case. At least the two main possibilities are next to each other!

I used to find that the composite coaches (first and standard) were unreserved in the standard section. Not once did I enter this section to find the standards seats reserved here. There's not loads of standard seats in this section, but this would indeed be coach D/K as you mention. Note I haven't travelled regularly on EMR for about a year so it's possible things have changed.

I don't but heading for the part composite coaches D and K is usually a good shout!
