A question has been raised to me and I'm hoping someone on the forum will be able to shed some light on it.

Handbook 12 states that "You must place a WSMB in the ‘four-foot’ 100 metres (approximately 100 yards) from each end of the work site at the agreed mileage" with the diagram below;

Does anybody know why this is the case? Is there a reason for this distance?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thank you

Near where the 3 ridings meet
Safety overrun?

The harder one to answer is when working up to the Possession limit boards.
eg. At a junction, especially behind the nose joints with the other line not under possession.
Where do the WSMB's go then?

West is best
Don’t forget, inside a T3 occupation there can be ballast trains, rail trains, tamping machines, rail grinding machines, ballast regulator machines, motorised trolleys, 360 (JCB type) machines. Or other engineering trains, machines.

On approach to the worksite, the marker boards denote the limits of the area under the control of the ES. But just in case of anything going wrong, it’s best to have the 100 metres (yards) gap between the marker board and any staff. And this also gives any rail mounted machine or train a tolerance before getting to the marker board when working inside the worksite.
