Does anyone know what is happening at Euston?

They've closed down all of the retail units facing the departure boards and erected hoardings between the main 2 doors.

Some scaffolding has been put up and Rhodar have been in all week making very slow progress in constructing some asbestos tents ready for what looks like removal of the asbestos panelling between the glazing in the walls.

Are they planning on building some more/new retail units?

Anything they're going to build now will be extremely temporary. Even if HS2 were cancelled completely - vanishingly unlikely - Network Rail would still be knocking Euston down and starting again. The plans for HS2 are that everything above the platforms will be replaced but the classic platforms will otherwise stay as they are, with the new HS2 ones alongside and lower down. Originally they were going to completely rebuild every platform in the station but they wanted to reduce the cost and complexity of the works.

We can always hope that they're going to remove the retail shacks and return the concourse to its fine original condition!

I'm not sure what's happening, but could just be asbestos removal as you say.

I couldn't find any planning permission for the station recently, so can't work out what it is. I'll try to ask someone on Monday morning when I pass through.

there was talk of a new mezzanine area in the concourse to create more retail space & improve pax flows, albeit something of minimum construction cost, as it would likely be changed again for HS2 works. I thought this was to happen before the olympics though?

The works are to create a new balcony/mezzanine level around the outskirts of the main concourse. Will allow more retail units etc.

Went through Euston Sunday night on the way back to Manchester form Paris, and have to say it isn't a very inviting station to be at, at all. Concrete mess I would have to say. A complete redesign is whats needed with, certainly, a lot more light needs to be let into the place.

the main problem with Euston is the hoardes of people waiting for their platform to be announced. This situation is made worse by the number of retail units in the concourse blocking pedestrians

With a new mezzanine and units at the top at the front, it will drastically reduce the amount of light being let in.

How I agree!
Then the mad dash when the platform number goes up, especially if it's something like platforms 2 or 18!

I actually quite like Euston (ducks for cover!)

I agree that from outside, the building isn't especially attractive. The area around the front may not be particularly welcoming, but I find the concourse spacious, bright, clean and reasonably elegant - something that removal of all the kiosks (sorry, prime retail opportunities) would enhance.

Just look at how spacious it was when new, as shown in the opening scenes of this BTF film:
