We were in Newcastle for a few days and on Monday wanted to visit a few places over the course of the day so at 9:48 purchased Adult DaySavers A+B+C - helped by a very helpful staff member at Central Metro station as it wasn't obvious what to look for on the ticket machine.

Our first trip was from Central to Wallsend, then after visiting the Roman Fort (excellent signage from the Metro station) back on the Metro to Whitley Bay (where I wanted to see if the lovely mosaic was still on the wall of the station - yes it was and I was pleased to see it wasn't vandalised).

After spending some time there we took the Metro back to North Shields where we walked down to the ferry dock - better signage needed from the Metro station here - and took the ferry across to South Shields.

After a walk on the beach we took the Metro back to Monument. We did consider staying on and doing the whole yellow circuit from South Shields round the loop and ending at St James but were too tired so decided against it.

So five journeys Central-Wallsend, Wallsend-Whitley Bay, Whitley Bay-North Shields, Ferry and South Shields-Monument, and the option of more, for £6.20 was a bargain!

Maintenance works were happening on a number of stations we visited - good to see the lovely old features being maintained.

Interesting to watch the reaction of some of the passengers on one train when an announcement was made that revenue officers would be boarding at the next station. It was obvious some didn't have tickets and were making a quick decision to get off now or risk carrying on with their journey and being caught.

Glad you enjoyed your day tour, WW. What did you think of the regularity/timing of the trains? As you may have gathered, the dubious reliability of the system at present is a topic of some interest here

It is great value when the service runs well. The Network One tickets allow bus travel too (a handy back up and you can go to other places also) for £9.10

I'm glad you enjoyed it, I'd defo recommend the Tyne Foot Tunnel as well.
If you return, try and order a couple free Pop cards off Nexus the day before. You can load them with a fiver at the ticket machines and they will cap you at £4.85 each for a day on the Metro (no ferry included, so only if you're not planning on doing the ferry again)

Just £6 now, and £6.80 if you want to extend it into County Durham and Northumberland. Also due to this new ticket price the A+B+C Metro Saver has dropped to £5.90, which makes it look like less of a bargain when it's an extra 10p to add all buses, and the Northern service between Sunderland and Blaydon.

Has the price dropped permanently, or to reflect the lack of GNE busses?
