Definitely the family travelcard, contactless is £2.50 for each tube journey, and normally works out more expensive than just getting a travelcard.
What station are you traveling from?

£17.20 for each adult and £2 for each child.
A day return to Fenchurch Street is £13.50/6.75 on weekends but £17.30/8.65 on weekdays

Ok the day return would be a bit cheaper for the kids and the tube free i guess but nearly £40 for the four of us on the travelcard seems to be the way to go i guess....how come you know so much...lol

Actually, I would suggest to get a Leigh On Sea - London Zone 1-6 Travelcard from C2C.
It would be £17.20 for adult (without railcard, 1/4 off for family travelcard, 1/3 off if having railcard), half price for children.

So I would suggest OP and partner get a Leigh-London Zone1-6 travelcard while the children get a Leigh - London Return ticket (£2).
