Hi All,

I travelled from Farnborough Main (FNB) to Victoria (VIC) yesterday on the 17:00, returning at 20:52 and bought an off-peak 1st class return.

On both my exit from and entrance back onto the platform at VIC, the barrier rejected my ticket with a code but the staff on the gate just waved me through.

Is this usually the case or should I be aware of some restriction for next time please?

BTW, I'd forgotten the delights of the "first class" on Southern from Clapham Junction that I moaned about on here last year!

I've never once got through the barriers at Victoria with ticket issued in Scotland. There's a constant stream of people going through the manned barriers, so I suspect they're set to reject most things.

I'm guessing you bought the route "Not Via Reading" ticket? If so, the restriction code for this ticket is SB (you can find this through http://brfares.com ), and the full restriction text can therefore be read here http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/SB (beware the restriction text on BRFares as the open data published by the rail industry which powers it is often out of date).

In this case, your journey looks fine to me.

Ticket barriers are often programmed with incorrect restriction data as they don't tend to know much about the fares they're accepting/rejecting! But in this case, I feel it's more likely there was just something wrong with the magstripe on the ticket. It happens sometimes.

Check the code that appears on the display on the barrier, that'll help identify what the issue is.
Did the ticket allow entry at Farnborough?

I *think* it was 103 but I was too busy saying "oh *****" to myself. Yes, worked the gate at Farnborough

No idea on the "Not via Reading" (though I assume not). I bought the off peak 1st from one of the machines and recognised the price from what I had been sold by the ticket office before, though that time I went to/from Waterloo and the barriers there worked fine.

Interesting point there; you may recall I moaned a few months ago on about three different threads about the barriers at Waterloo having super off peaks as a programmed reject; in the past couple of months or so that appears to have been corrected - my last three trips with super off peaks have seen the Waterloo barriers accept them in both directions. :D

Maybe once again someone in the right place read the forum...?
