Few hours in Manchester overnight - before early flight

Hi all

I've booked a very early morning flight in September from Manchester Airport around 6am, so early even the first (3:40am) bus from where I live is a bit risky even with only cabin baggage, to avoid Ryanair's crazy baggage fees, only weekend trip anyway.

I'll look to get the last train into Manchester Picc, arrives around 23:55 and will need to be at the airport around 4am.

Aside from Manchester Picc itself (and indeed Antonios ) where I could spend a few hours? Is it worth heading to the Airport itself for 1am? 4 hours on a station is hell, I've done it with London St Pancras (and Picc twice, once for 7 hours ) and that was boring. Wouldn't mind a power socket near-by

I think transpennine run services throughout the night to the airport . I think you'd be better there

Don't be mad, you could use the 199. Arrives airport 0450. No checked baggage go straight through.

Bus runs every day at 0330 from Buxton or 0345 from Chapel to Man Airport.

There's some info here about cafes etc., but like all such sites, I can't vouch for how up-to-date it is!

Depends very much on the day (or night!) of the week. Some of the bars on Canal Street and Richmond Street stay open Saturday and Sunday mornings pretty much until people stop buying drinks (and don't worry, it's not compulsory )

But as others have said, I think you'd be better off at the Airport that time of night.

There is very little landside - only a small Spa shop in the Ryanair terminal as security does not open until 0400 - it should be warm and dry but doesn't have much else going for it, very little seating in particular.

I am not sure if Antonios opens with the same hours during the night it used to do so. When I have walked past at silly hours recently it seems to be shut.

It has been known on more than one occasion for me to while away a few nocturnal hours at MIA if the leap via the TPE service to Leeds and back is not an option. The buffet on the station is usually open for most of the night as well as some of the outlets in the terminals.

I may well need to do something similar for one of the forthcoming inch of track railtours next month.

There is a 24 hour mcdonalds near Oxford Road station if that is any use. They have Wifi but they don't generally have power sockets...

What night is it you're going to be in Manchester anyway, the nightlife is rather different night to night, and you could have a good one and turn up rather drunk for your flight so you would need to be trying to act sober when you checked in (online)...?

If it's only a weekend break, though, he's going to be pretty knackered- hangover and no sleep by the time he gets there. It's going to eat into his weekend away somewhat.

Personally I would compare prices for a hotel and a mini cab from your house to Manchester Airport and, if you drive, airport parking - at least look at the numbers, they might not be as bad as you think.

Safer than walking through city centre streets after midnight. Less danger of meeting an aggressive drunk, or encountering someone offering to sell you "personal services (+ infectious diseases) ".

Book into a hotel either at the airport or nearby, when I went to Lanzarote in 2005, got to Manchester about 10pm and booked. In a. b&b to get my head down for a couple of hours, was in Altrincham I think

Its a Friday morning flight, I may just head down to the Airport then and hang around down there.

If the 0345 bus wasn't to turn up/break down, only having 1hr 20 between arriving at bus station/flight departure. is too much to risk

To add to my previous comment, bus 43 operates throughout the night between Piccadilly Gardens and Manchester Airport. Every day, every 30 minutes, journey time about 45 minutes.

I was hoping for a lovely portion of chips and gravy (as you don't really get it in the south) - uncooked chips, and a really horrible taste to them.

Who goes wrong with chips and gravy!?! This hellhole does.

And to cap it off, the train ticket inspector laughed at me for getting food from there, lol!

Great news, Antonio's food hygiene has gone from

0 - Urgent action required by council, closure required.

to

1 - Major Improvement Necessary, Special Measures.

Many suspect the 'major' improvement is due to the disappearance of the most recent food inspector, however the café now has a months supply of hamburger meat from an 'unknown source'
