Finding information about trains running near me

Hi everyone.
New to the forum, interested in mainline steam and most diesel pre 1980s.
I’ve no interest in anything modern or current.

Anyhow, I use RTT, RailAdvent and occasionally Railway Herald to find what’s running. However, these are not entirely reliable.
For instance I see two locos today running near me, one from York NRM, which I’ve heard on the grapevine is Flying Scotsman, (I’ve no idea how they know) and another shortly after, running from Carnforth Steamtown to Barrow Hill.
I’ve no idea what this second loco is, but I’ve no doubt that it will be something of interest.

Firstly, is there anywhere on the forum where these movements are discussed, and secondly, can anyone suggest alternative places to source this info.

You can ask what may be running any trains in the TOPS requests thread. But before asking about any working, it's also worth checking out the railtours & preservations and Allocations, Diagrams & Timetables forums to see if there are any threads that may contain the information.

Are Flying Scotsman itineraries still kept under wraps these days? I remember they used to be kept away from the general public due to overcrowding concerns at stations, bridges, etc at one point.

It turned out to be a waste of time, whilst it did appear to be in steam, it was being hauled by 66117 diesel upfront.

Local railway enthusiast Facebook groups are always good if you use Facebook, for the likes of light engine and ECS moves as well as the 'main events'
