Checking train times on the VR site I can see what seem to be advance fares but I can't find any reference to walk-up fares.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Fares like that do not exist.

Demand based pricing is used and fares tend to be a little higher the closer to departure time. I find about 3-4 days before is optimal.

To buy tickets, download the VR app or buy from the site. The seat is included in the price as standard.

Thanks very much - I guessed that must be the system but it doesn't seem to be specifically stated anywhere on the site.

Edited: Is there any way to know what the maximum fare could be for any train / route?

Each train, time and date has its own pricing - the earlier the cheaper.

Can't really say that there's a maximum price, but as an example (economy class), booking for tomorrow Helsinki-Tampere, it varies between 16.90 for the local trains (this price is fixed, but a 2h19 journey time on an Sm4 unit). The Intercity prices vary between 21 and 34 eur depending on time, eg: 16h000 departure from Helsinki is 33.90, while the 16h27 is 27.90 and 17h00 23.90. THere are some journey time diffferences, 1h39 to 1h54.

If I try booking for 1st of August, then the Intercity prices are as low as 6.90 with the most expensive at 21.90 - most are around 11-13 eur. Interestingly the local trains are still 16.90 due to their fixed price.

So, the same day fares are the highest you can say.

En ole suomalainen, mutta asuin siella monta vuottaa sitten!

Thanks again - I'm trying to plan for a Helsinki airport connection north and have found a good train fare, but that connection may fail if the flight is delayed. I think I'll buy it and if the flight departure looks to be delayed, I'll use the VR 'switching' facility for the later train.

Sounds like a good plan. VR offer insurance for about 5 eur I think.

If you haven't been here for a while, then change at Tikkurila - the station has been completely rebuilt - now a mini shopping mall.
