I'm making another one of my frequent journeys to Milton Keynes, and I'm travelling down via London for a change. I'm looking at ways of getting from London to Milton Keynes on the night of Friday 5th Feb at around 8pm and was considering the flexibility of an off-peak return at £29.70.

However, looking at the whole package, there's a £17 1st class Advance single on the 2043, which I can be certain of making and doesn't get me in too late.

I can couple this with a £14 Off peak single on the return, making the journey I want, with the flexibility I need (on the return), for £1.30 more with a leg in first class.

Now I'm conscious that 30 minutes isn't a lot of time to do anything in 1st class. Am I to expect anything other than a more comfortable seat for my £1.30?

Yes tea or coffee plus still or sparkling water to which you may help yourself.

If you ask nicely you probably wouldn't be turned down to swap that for a soft drink though. You might also get a biscuit or snack.

Additionally you can visit the London Euston First Class Lounge.

This could interest me, as I'll have another 40 minutes or so at Euston. How can I get value for money from that?

Also, is that £14 single fare back a walk-up fare, or does it have to be purchased at the same time as the outward Advance?

It's a comfortable place to wait with free wifi and sockets to use. It's quite dirty and tatty most of the time now because it was last refurbished over a year ago and is very very badly looked after. Nevertheless you can get a complimentary tea, coffee juice or pop while you wait. Other assorted refreshments vary by time of day but I wouldn't count on those.

A quick check at NRE suggests that it's the walk up fare for a Virgin Only Milton Keynes - Euston ticket so won't have to be booked at the same time.
