I've seen some freight sidings in the tangle of lines around Battersea. What is the actual flow here? It looks like aggregates - are they brought in here then used on the various construction sites in London?

Ah, sounds like Stewart’s Lane. The aggregate terminal there receives regular trains from Cliffs (near my eponymous Junction). There are also trains staged via Acton, typically from the Mendip quarries, I believe.

There are quite a few freights in the Clapham Junction / general Battersea area which bypass Stewarts Lane entirely, including those travelling via Longhedge Junction and Latchmere Junctions. (Map: http://carto.metro.free.fr/cartes/metro-tram-london/ )

For example, a number of freights can be seen here at Longhedge Jn:
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/sea...3/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=freight&order=actual

You can also search for freight via stations such as Imperial Wharf, all of which will make its way through the general area:
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/sea...3/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=freight&order=actual

Nb. Please note that many of the headcodes shown are “scrambled” and not the real ones, and obviously a number of these services rarely run in reality.

That doesn’t actually help with the OP’s question about Battersea though?
The Mendip services don't run every day to all destinations so the Purley and Stewarts Lane are alternative destinations on different days

I take your general point but the OP did ask specifically about the actual flow in the freight sidings in the Battersea area, not the wider area or region...
