Galashiels or Peebles

In June, myself and a friend are looking at staying a night in either of these towns.
Having never been to either, I would welcome advice about which is the more interesting town to stay in. eg general ambience, interesting shops, pubs, etc.

I would say that Peebles is probably more "Picturesque" than Gala.

Agreed - both places are nice but Peebles would be my choice. My grand mother used to love going there. Her daughter (my aunt who taught at George Herriot school in Edinburgh for 40 years and lived in Penicuick) would take her to Peebles often.

Glentress - just outside Peebles - is a nice place for mountain biking and walking.

Peebles is nicer than Gala by quite a long way, I'd say. Gala is pleasant enough, but quite "utilitarian", if you know what I mean - useful for everyday stuff, but not particularly special. It has the Borders Railway and decent bus links, though - so if you don't have access to a car, it might be better for getting around.

The whole area is fantastic walking and cycling territory.
