Good evening everyone,

Can anyone advise me what GBRf use their brand new JNA wagons for?

I ask because it looks to my rather untutored eye that the only way you can load or unload them is through the top of the wagon by grab or some other machine. There do not appear to be apertures in the sides or the base.

It has piqued my curiosity!

Thanks in advance of your advice.

The most common use for these type of wagons, high sided box wagons, is for aggregate flows.

They can be used for any number of "Bulk Products" such as aggregate, coal, gypsum, scrap, construction waste etc.
The advantage of this type of wagon is that no fixed loading/unloading facilities are required at the terminal. Loading can be by grab, shovel or even fixed equipment used for loading hoppers. Unloading, can be product dependant, is best with a clam shell grab to avoid damage to the wagon.
Reduced terminal costs can make rail viable for new or short term flows.

Network Rail use similar wagons for there bulk ballast flows but they are not used for possession work. Low sided box wagons are used, either Network Rail wagons or hired in wagons from the FOC's. High sided wagons are not used due to the lack of control methods for safe loading on a worksite. Measures can be put in place at a terminal to ensure safe loading that are not possible/ practical on a worksite.
