What are the rules for walking onto platforms 1+2 at Glasgow Central. These are the Virgin Pendolino platforms and they don't have ticket barriers. I have often wondered if I would be allowed to spot from the end of the platform, but wasn't sure if this would be permitted without a valid ticket. I wouldn't board any trains (which I have seen some people do quickly to avoid the 40p toilet charge, often to be going on an accidental hour long trip to Carlisle!) Thanks for any help in advance!

Should be fine. You should officially sign in with a member of station staff first, and may have to buy a platform ticket, but if you aren't silly and don't do anything stupid, it is fairly quiet that far down the end!

Should be fine, I'd suggest signing in would be a sensible idea as occasionally the Virgin staff will set up a barrier at the end of the platform while they're preparing a train. I think more of the spotters congregate at Platform 11, though? Might be a bit more social and possibly a better view? (Can't say I've ever been spotting, so not sure if either is a good thing!).

They are fine at Glasgow Central, out of courtesy sign in, they are fine though and will set you up on the system, the platform staff are generally very friendly.

I'd agree the longer middle platforms offer a much better view; they are also a lot wider and more sheltered should the weather turn quickly - which it does have a habit of doing in Scotland!
