Hi, I am planning a trip away soon, heading to London. On the outward I will be traveling with Avanti, but when I come back (4th or 5th March) the WCML will be closed for eng work.

Is this ticket valid via York? It's an any permitted Off Peak Priv Return between Glasgow and London Terminals. However the fare is set by Avanti West Coast. Does that mean I need to travel WCML both ways and get a replacement bus or on the way back can I take LNER to Edinburgh then Scotrail over to Glasgow Queen Street?

Thanks!

It doesn't matter who sets the fare; Northern set the fares between Penrith and Carlisle (they took the flow over from XC) but you have no way of using their services.

Whilst there are more expensive via York fares, that doesn't exclude the Any Permitted fare from being used on the ECML, which is one of the permitted routes.

Next time I would get a ticket to somewhere like West Brompton; for only 10p extra you get cross London transfers thrown in, and no confusion regarding a superfluous "via York'' option

I've done it several times, and often for the same reasons (later engineering work on the line I travelled out on).

Glasgow — London off-peak return ticket is valid on various routes, including via Sunderland, York, (or via Cambridge?) . I think It’s even a better deal to use it as a off peak return ticket between Edinburgh and London :)

And to add to the mess, the via York fare, being a higher price than the any permitted is still valid the other way, not going via York, though some guards might want to issue a zero excess.
