Hi all, haven't posted in a while but I found an article at the end of the railway 200 timeline about the Great British Railways plan - 3 operators will end their contract and become government run - firstly what will happen to liveries and interiors of trains - secondly is this a good idea?

By the time contacts run out, it'll be the next election and if a new government comes along, they might reverse everything? What then?

I doubt that if Labour loses the next election, any successor will reverse the status quo, it's just too much political capital to risk.
They will have far greater priorities than rail (assuming Labour's GBR is working better than franchising by then).
Labour did not reverse privatisation after 1997, despite having said they would, and having the majority to do so.
Predicting party manifestos four years out is a waste of time, especially with an imploding Conservative vote, and with Reform in the mix.

1. We're not sure yet. There's a thread or two on here about it, I think they're in speculative discussion. There is reason to believe branding will be rolled out later this month, as we've had some articles suggesting it will. I guess we'll find out in a few weeks. Refurbishment of train interiors is probably not going to happen for a while.
2. Again, we don't know yet. The consultation on how it'll run is still ongoing, I believe, and the actual legislation to start GBR proper is expected to make it through Parliament next year iirc. I don't see why it's not a good idea - and it will be different to DFTO, so I wouldn't use them as a precedent. That said, the big improvements probably won't be seen for a few years - when everything is finally nationalised and things can properly change.
3. I don't see why a new government would change everything. That would be a lot of hassle and work which would not have much benefit, especially as there are more pressing issues.

If it's anything like they have set up, like GB Energy, it will be completely shambolic...
Some people, including me, believe GBR has been set up to fail. This is the most plausible explanation for the incompatible objectives set for the new organisation. GBR will be required by law to take heed of various pressure groups including local Mayors, freight operators and Open Access operators who will have conflicting objectives. In addition GBR is required to increase rail freight even though it's not a freight operator! It is highly improbable that not one senior civil servant at DfT noticed these demands upon GBR might not be achievable. In addition it is clear from remarks made by Heidi Alexander that she has been groomed by her civil servants to be absolutely intolerant of failure by GBR. She spoke to the Commons Select Committee of "ruthlessly" analysing GBR's performance. It has been evident for some time that senior officials within DfT love having control of the railways and will be very reluctant to cede that authority to the new authority.

Well that thing a few months ago where they had a contract for a railway but no rolling stock should set the alarm bells ringing!

We’ve got so many threads running on this, so I’ll list a few below rather than us starting yet another one up.
