GWR map - proposed stations

Hello all, been visiting sporadically for a while.

I saw an interesting map up in the lost property office at Temple Meads recently that I've not been able to find online with some googling.

Full map of the GWR network, geographical rather than a system diagram with zoomed in sections for West London, Bristol, Exeter and Plymouth. It looked recent, as it included Green Park and Ashley Down.

What caught my eye were the proposed stations on the map, with some long standing plans there but also some less advanced/ likely proposals. From what I remember they were:

North Filton
Henbury
St Anne's Park
Devizes Parkway
Edginswell
Charfield
Cirencester
Stroudwater/Stonehouse Bristol Road
Portishead
Pill

Curious to hear thoughts/insights.

Welcome to the forum.

When you say lost property office, do you mean as in an official GWR-published map displayed on the wall?
As it shows proposed stations, might it be a GWR internal document?

Wellington and Cullompton must have been on that map as well.

These were reported delayed last year to 2027, I haven't seen anymore recent news but others on here may know better.
Devizes Parkway
This was rejected under the previous government, the business case didn't meet and was believed would eat up line capacity and journey time in a critical part of the route.
Cirencester
Was this station on a branch of its own on the map? The Golden valley line doesn't pass right through; currently Kemble is effectively a parkway station for this town.
Portishead
Pill
Nobody knows what on earth is going on with this branch and its proposed station reopenings.

Thank you.

Yes, that's what it appeared. Seems like a sound assumption.

Now you mention it Wellington was definitely there, can't remember regarding Cullompton.

Somehow I don't see that getting approval in the current climate. Doubling the GV line service frequency and having a dedicated P&R express bus link between Kemble station and Circencester would probably be cheaper.

Yeah, was definitely the most surprising one to see on there. A good 3-4 miles of new line, new station, signalling etc.

Cirencester once had 2 stations - one on the branch from Kemble, and the other on the Midland & South Western Junction Railway from Cheltenham Spa to Swindon & Winchester.

See map at:
There was also Chesterton Lane Halt (although had a short life)

The proposal for a station in Cirencester is linked to about 2500 home development (The Steadings on Bathurst Estate) and other developments to South West of Cirencester. Idea is basically to rebuild the branch line (although possibly to very light rail standard). The old Cirencester station site still exists but last half a mile might not get rebuilt as a bypass and Waitrose are in the way. Unclear if it will remain an idea or might progress.

All Cirencester needs is a DECENT bus service. Have a frequent and reliable shuttle bus from 6am to midnight, one that ties in to the trains, and people will use it.

Sure it wasn’t a bus link? - GW’s public facing maps show some of them as well.

Don't forget the Cotswolds and Gloucestershire strategic plan seems to include options for a complete new town infilling from Kemble to Cirencester with housing. Clearing the trackbed (and replacing couple of bridges, along with single track viaduct across a car park could brings trains back to a massively growing area. The proposed road layout doesn't make it easy for a bus to get to Kemble station whilst serving anything useful
