Just went through Handforth station at speed and as well as the Northern station signs, there are others in the style of the DLR, Merseyrail, etc. What's the reason?

The Friends of Handforth Station got them, they also put in some benches (with 2000) on them. It is a well looked after station courtesy of the friends group that helps out there.
Shame the same cannot be said about a minority of idiots and retrobates that use that station.

Indeed, the Friends of Handforth Station are a long-established body that have been used as a good example to follow by other like-minded organisations. Regretfully, some young retrobates (to use your term) from the nearby Spath Lane estate find the proximity of the railway station too much to resist..
