Heathrow T4 to Paddington

I have a forum ticket Heathrow Rail (HRA) to Paddington (PAD), anytime Return 1st, Route Heathrow Express.

I will be returning from Terminal 4. As I understand it I have to use a free transfer, probably ElizLine to T2/T3, then use the HExpress to PAD.

It may be simpler to stay on the ElizLine to PAD. Would my ticket cover this, or must I use HExpress?
Thanks in advance.

Your ticket is for Heathrow Express only.
Which means that it's not valid on Elizabeth line services to Paddington. However, you can use the Elizabeth line from T4 to T2&3 since no fare is charged for inter-terminal transfers. You can pick up a free transfer ticket at the dispensing machines if you want to 'legitimise' this, not that there would ever be a check in this section for the aforementioned reason.

You don’t need to ‘legitimise‘ it, HEx tickets are valid for inter-terminal transfer if required and will work at the ticket gates at T4.

They will, but that is effectively a matter of custom & practice - it isn't contained in the industry data as an easement or otherwise, so journey planners can't offer a through fare for Paddington <-> Heathrow T4 journeys involving a mixture of HEx and Elizabeth line .

And because there isn't a fare defined from T2&3 to T4 (this should explicitly be shown as free IMHO), split ticketing capable sites can't offer anything either.

Thanks for all the useful advice. To be on the safe side I’ll probably pick up a free transfer ticket.

But you may be interested in the FAQ advice from Trainline :

“Are there any direct trains from Heathrow Terminal 4 to Heathrow Terminal 2?

There are no direct trains that run between Heathrow Terminal 4 and Heathrow Terminal 2. You’ll need to make at least 0 changes along the way.”

Definitely sounds like it! Considering the station is "Heathrow Terminals 2/3" it may have not realised this. Some systems refer to it as "Heathrow Central" with the CRS code being HXX.
