I have decided to start this thread after seeing a lot of Forum Users ask about the history of various local bus routes; the same questions about the same routes seem to get asked a lot.
The purpose of this thread is to document information about Local Bus Routes such as garage, frequency and vehicle type, both currently and historically where knowledge exists.
I would have suggested adding such information to the relevant Wikipedia page but I've seen information like this frequently get removed so this doesn't seem like a reliable option.
So far I've written about the current routes operated by Lothian Buses. I'm aiming to do East Coast Buses and Lothian Country Buses next. I aim to write about First Glasgow after that but I'll need a lot more contributions from other Forum Members for this as I'm not as familiar with the area. If you want your local company's routes to be added then leave a comment and I'll edit it into the main post.
If you have further information or corrections about any of the routes already existing here then also leave a comment.

What I've currently got for Lothian Buses is shown below. Some routes are missing their Route Colour but I'll add them when I can. Most routes are missing their City Centre route description but I'll add this when I can.

Some of the routes are missing but I'll add them when I get back home later today. Most of the routes are missing their Route Colour but again I'll add them later today. The date for most routes' latest timetable change is the 11th of September 2022, I'll add this to each route where relevant when I'm back later. Most routes are missing their City Centre route description but I'll add this when I get back later.

If you're planning to do a feature on the history of Glasgow buses you should buy this book as a starter

Some Lothian bus routes are still recognisable as direct replacements for Edinburgh Corporation tram routes, more than 65 years after the last of the old Edinburgh trams ran in November 1956
  • Bus route 3 was tram route 3 between Stenhouse and Newington Station
  • Bus route 4 was tram route 4 between Slateford and Piershill/Kings Road
  • Bus route 5 was tram route 5 between Morningside and Piershill
  • Bus route 7 was tram route 7 between Stanley Road (Newhaven) and Liberton
  • Bus route 8 was tram route 8 between Granton Square and Newington Station
  • Bus route 10 was tram route 10 between Colinton and Bernard Street (Leith)
  • Bus route 11 was tram route 11 between Stanley Road (Newhaven) and Fairmilehead
  • Bus route 16 was tram route 16 between Fairmilehead and Granton Square
  • Bus route 23 was tram route 23 between Granton Road Station and Morningside
  • Bus route 26 was tram route 26 between Piershill and Drum Brae South
  • Bus route 27 was tram route 27 between Granton Road Station and Firrhill
What is remarkable is that the bus routes introduced as direct replacements for tram services have kept the same route number, and still for the most part have the same core route through the city centre.

Good luck with this as it could prove to be a huge task depending on how detailed a history you want. With many routes changing numbers it makes tracking changes and logging them a bit of a night mare to be honest. I have been working on Devon & Cornwall routes for many years and keep a detailed log of each route by the vosa / govt uk licence with all registered changes and timetables wherever possible. It takes a lot of work - but as I am sure you realise - can be quite interesting to look back on. Plymothian Transit Bus Services Plymouth

This is a good site for those wanting route history from the North West, timetables included too were available.

Some small corrections in the interest of accuracy and consistency:

Service 2:
Towards The Jewel: Dalry Road, West Maitland Street, Torphichen Street, Dewer Place, Morrison Street, Bread Street, West Port, Grassmarket, Candelmaker Row, Bristo Place, Potterrow, Marshal St., Nicolson Square, South Clark Street.

(Merchant Street is the small Street that runs off Candelmaker Row and under George IV bridge)

Towards the Gyle: South Clark Street, Nicholson Square, Marshall St, Potterrow, Lothian St., Teviot Place, Forrest Road, Candelmaker Row, Grassmarket, West Port, East Fountainbridge, Fountainbridge, Semple Street, Morrison St., Dalry Road.

Service 3:
Towards Mayfield: Dalry Road, West Maitland Street, Shandwick Place, Princes Street, North Bridge, South Bridge, South Ckark Street.
(Buses are using North Bridge southbound)
Towards Clovenstone: South Clark Street, Chamber St., George IV Bridge, The Mound, (Hanover St., George Street., Fredrick St.,) Princes Street, Shandwick Place, Atholl Place, Torphichen Place, Morrison Street., Dalry Road.

Surgeon's Hall, National Museum of Scotland and Haymarket Station are buildings rather than Street names, (and while Bristo Square is a "street", it is not actually driveable) so possibly best to using actual route street names, if your intention was to inlcude places of interest then maybe add in brackets after the Street name.

Eg. Dalry Road (for Haymarket Station),

Not sure how much detail you wish to go into but for example the 300 was Airport to Cameron Toll (20 mins mon-fri, 30 mins sat/sun) it was culled during Covid, re -intoroduced on an hourly frequency, some point during 2021, Airport - Nicholson Sq., then cut to Monday to Friday Airport - Bread Street.

I also wish to add that you have done a fantastic job with this! Please don't think I'm trying to rubbish your efforts, I'm not, I'm just trying to give some constructive feedback.

Then of course there are all the historal routes that have ceased running or ran differently to today....
1/6 Circle (& 6 St.Andrew Sq - Holyrood),
5/51 (Colinton - Brunstane),
9 (St. Andrew Sq - Livingston),
17 (Granton - Drylaw - City Centre - ?? I think Morningside),
18 (Barnton - Buirdiehouse, later South Queensferry- Barnton Burdiehouse)
20 (Barnton to Hyvot's Bank),
.... I'll stop there :{

If you're planning to do a feature on the history of Glasgow buses you should buy this book as a starter

Thanks for that suggestion. I'm probably going to avoid buying books as their material will be copyrighted which then puts restrictions on what the information in my posts can be used for. I was aiming for more of a sort of "common knowledge" open-source effort here.
Thanks for that, I'll add those in when I get the chance.

That would all be useful at some point but I'll need to finish up what I've already started here before I start adding lots of new stuff.
I'm not sure if you can upload straight to this thread? That would probably be most useful in terms of longevity of access.

Thanks for that, I was actually just listing the names of the bus stops served as listed on either https://www.lothianbuses.com/timetables/ or https://bustimes.org/operators/lothian-buses. Maybe I need to make this clearer in each entry.

I'd like to add in the above historical routes, do you or anyone else have any more details as to the time period in which they ran?

Ahh, that makes sense now, without context it seemed like an odd mix of streets and places/buildings/landmarks - it should have clicked that you were using bus stop names, but didn't! might be worth making it clearer that's what you are using.

Unfortunately I have to rely on my memory, in my younger days I used to collect and collate all the Lothian timetables, had several lever arch files worth, but over the years and house moves I fear I took the rash decision that they wouldn't be of use and probably binned them (I wish now I still did have them!)

I started this after deregulation, so 1985/6ish and had them right up to around 2002 - as you can imagine, even just for LRT/Lothian Buses It was quite a large collection!

I used to own this book (I got it when it was first published) but it got lost amongst various house moves. The only thing that could possibly be copyright in this book would be some of the pictures as the route information was taken from what was in the public domain.

The fact that many Edinburgh bus services are still recognisable as former tram routes points contrasts with other cities, especially London, where I can think of only three routes that are still recognisable as direct replacements for tram services.

  • Tfl route 109 (Brixton - Croydon) was a replacement for tram routes 16 and 18 (Purley - Central London) and when introduced on 8th April 1951 ran between Purley and Central London (Victoria Embankment) over the same roads as the tram service it replaced.
  • TfL route 171 (Elephant & Castle - Catford Garage) was a replacement for tram route 33 (West Norwood - Manor House via the Kingsway subway) and when introduced on 7th April 1952 ran between West Norwood and Tottenham
  • Tfl route 185 (Victoria - Lewisham) was a replacement for tram route 58 (Victoria - Lewisham - Blackwall Tunnel), and when introduced on 7th October 1951 ran between Victoria and the Blackwall Tunnel via Lewisham and Greenwich.

In Wallasey one of the first tram routes in 1902 was Seacombe to New Brighton via Seabank Road, the route eventually became number 1, which today is now 411 New Brighton to Birkenhead Town Centre, the trams system was closed in 1933

Brighton & Hove maintain a comprehensive route history on a page on their website: https://history.buses.co.uk/history/route/welcome.htm. It covers all routes operated by the company since deregulation, including the dates of route/terminus changes (even minor ones). Individual stops and roads are not mentioned, though, except in rare cases.

In relation to an alternative to Wikipedia as a repository for such information, I wonder if https://uktransport.fandom.com/wiki/UK_Transport_Wiki may be suitable: I'm not familiar with this site, but I believe it works in the same way as Wikipedia.

Thanks for offering this. Do you have any timetables for Lothian Buses, and if so how far back do they cover? I'm thinking timetables covering 2017-2018 and during COVID would be useful. I have some notes regarding frequencies and routes but my notes are incomplete in some areas.
Thanks!

No problem, I only have one digital timetable which is a 63 timetable from April 2016, but I have a bunch of physical Lothian timetables from 2017-18. I have timetables covering the 1, 3/N3, 11/N11, 7/N7, 8, 10, 12/X12, 14, 21, 22/N22, 23, 24, 25/X25/N25, 26, 27, 31/X31/N31, 33/X33/N3, 36, 37/X37/N37, 38, 41, 43/X43, 45, 47/X47/N37, 49, 200, 300 and X27/X28, so not all routes but a fair few of them. I have a couple of ECB network guides as well, from 2017 and 2018. I could scan them and upload them somewhere or share them on here if you're interested.

I don't have any timetables from during COVID unfortunately.

I have tried creating various articles for bus routes on Wikipedia. Unfortunately someone has now nominated a couple for deletion despite them clearly passing Wikipedia's own "notability" guidelines. If you want information to have any chance of sticking around you'll need to use news articles (backed up by timetables perhaps) to prove they are "notable", otherwise the pages will end up nominated for deletion.

Book sources are good too, if you've got a couple good books you can use those to establish notability.

I don't want to be too critical, as you've obviously done some research, but
(a) the 171 in its present form bears no resemblance to tram route 33, save a fairly short stretch of road between the Elephant and Camberwell Green shared with many other routes: the southern half of the route was swapped with another tram replacement route 172 in 1957, taking it forever away from West Norwood and points north to Camberwell
(b) the 7 tram route between Uxbridge and Shepherd's Bush dating from 1933 and before was eventually superseded by trolleybus route 607, then bus route 207 and later 'express' route 607 between those selfsame termini along selfsame roads, give or take short extensions to a shopping centre and cutback in Uxbridge to the bus station. In effect it is exactly the same route.

As an aside, the number 185 was chosen as 58 and 158 were unavailable, but when the 685 trolleybus was withdrawn in 1960 that then became the now-available 58!

Here's some stuff from the 80s, on what was my patch.

Alder Valley: Hindhead Garage: 1984 (perhaps before) to deregulation.

211 Woolmer Hill Estate - High Lane Estate (Haslemere). Irregular frequency, roughly 2-hourly. Mostly Nationals, the odd VR. Interworked with 212

212 Alton-Oakhanger-Bordon-Whitehill-Liphook-Haslemere-High Lane Estate. Irregular frequency. Interworked with 211 at High Lane and the 213 at the western end. Some short journeys e.g. Whitehill to Liphook. Mostly Nationals, there was a VR on a short Whitehill-Liphook journey which came off a 268 and onto a 294

213 Alton-Kingsley-Bordon-Whitehill-Liphook. Irregular frequency, perhaps about every 90 mins for the 212 and 213 combined. A mix of Nationals plus Alton garage VRs, from what I could make out. Some journeys interworked with the 212 and 268

217 Hindhead-Tilford-Farnham. Shoppers and school journeys only, the former only twice a week, I think.

219 Aldershot-Farnham-Churt-Hindhead-Haslemere-Midhurst. Hourly during the day. Most journeys Nationals due to low bridge at Shottermill, however two to three (depending on the year) morning and two afternoon journeys were VRs due to school needs, and these diverted via Kings Road (southbound) or Shepherds Hill (northbound) in Haslemere. With the 226 and 268, formed part of a 20-min interval service Aldershot to Farnham.

221/222 "The Bordhill Bus". Circular daytime route in Bordon and Whitehill. Half hourly, used a more modern midi-bus.

223 Aldershot-Sandy Hill-Farnham-Shortheath. This was Hindhead-operated despite being more in the Farnham area. I rarely saw this, but figured out that it interworked with other Hindhead routes at Aldershot: at this time, buses showed the diagram number (e.g. H17) on the front, which means that, through careful study of the timetables, you could deduce the whole diagram throughout the day if you saw it in the morning and later in the afternoon; the practice at this time was to run just about everything in service, even late evening or early morning journeys to and from the depot. Nationals, from what I could make out. Hourly, I think.

225 Aldershot-Badshot Lea-Farnham-Rowledge. Another route which was in the Hindhead book and figured out was Hindhead-operated. Irregular, perhaps every 2 hours

226 Aldershot-Farnham-Bordon-Whitehill-Liss-Petersfield. Every 2 hours. Interworked with other Hindhead routes at Aldershot. Mostly Nationals, the odd VR.

236-238 Alton College routes, to the Liphook and Haslemere areas. Introduced Sep 1984. VRs. One of the three (237 for a time, then the 238) extended to Haslemere and worked back out as a 268.

245/247 Godalming area shopping buses from outlying villages. About twice a week.

246 Elstead-Godalming-Cranleigh. Irregular, about every two hours. Nationals. Some terminated Godalming and interworked with the 260.

260 Guildford-Compton-Godalming. Hourly with some variations. Nationals.

268 Aldershot-Farnham-Bordon-Whitehill-Bordon-Hindhead-Haslemere-Godalming-Guildford. Hourly over the full route, but additional journeys Aldershot to Whitehill in hours that the 226 did not run, which then typically interworked with the 212/213 as the timings did not fit for a turnaround back to Aldershot. A mix of Nationals and VRs, about 50:50 of each. Formed part of a 15-min interval Godalming-Guildford service with the 271, 292 and 294.

271 Guildford-Godalming-Chiddingfold. Hourly. On the opposite half-hour to the 268. Mix of Nationals and VRs.

274 Occasional variation of the 294 missing Aarons Hill Estate.

292 Guildford-Godalming-Eashing Lane Estate. Hourly. Mostly Nationals, the odd VR in the peaks.

294 Guildford-Godalming-Aarons Hill Estate. Hourly. Extended every two hours to Petersfield or Liphook. Mix of Nationals and VRs. Occasional journeys interworked with short 212 journeys at Liphook.

Will follow this up (at some point) with the changes that happened at deregulation.

Further to the question posted on Thursday regarding Lothian services/timetables during Covid and beyond.

Most or all Lothian services were revised on all of the following dates during the hiatus of 2020:
23 March; again on 29 March; again on 12 April; 17 May; 21 June; 12 July; 2 August; 13 September; and 15 November. The timetables for 29 March, 17 May, 21 June and 12 July exist as single PDFs containing all affected services, although not all were posted as such on the Lothian web site. The timetabes for 23 March, 12 April, 2 Aug, and 13 September were updated only on the journey planner and as such not downloadable.

The 15 November 2020 and subsequent 2021 and 2022 timetables exist as separate route by route PDFs.

The principal 2021 service change dates were 24 January; 15 March (affected school journeys only); 25 April; 27 June; 12 September; and 14 November. There are separate PDF timetables for each route for each date.

2022 change dates were 6 to 31 January (Saturday services all week Mon to Sat, no new timetables issued); 3 June; 24 July and 11 September. Again timetables are separate on a route by route basis.

So for some routes there have been upwards of 15 different timetables in place over different spells during the period March 2020 to end 2022.

Note that separate changes applied on East Coast Buses and Lothian Country, not necessarily on all of the same dates, but again a large number of changes were implemented throughout the period. Again there were instances where both operators had a single timetable document for all services as at a particular date, while in other cases, including all dates post 2020, the timetables are separate PDFs on a route by route basis.

Thanks for that detailed summary, I had forgotten that there were quite so many service changes in such a short time period in 2020. I had intended on writing in a "for the majority of 2020 this route operated as follows" but that might require looking through every timetable for that period which I don't really see the point in doing given the benefit it would have (i.e. not much). I'm going to type up the frequencies I've got noted down from 2018 and 2019, which both seem to be very similar to each other. If someone could have a look through and check I'm correct that would be great. I've only got notes from the daytime weekday timetable but that's probably sufficient detail unless people know the Saturday/Sunday/evening frequencies offhand.

The 6 ran every half hour before its withdrawal, I believe.

The 20 ran every half hour until it transferred to First (now McGill’s) in 2020. Now runs every hour.

The 15 operated every 30 minutes when it still ran to Penicuik.

I am wondering whether there would be enough interest on the forum to develop some kind of wiki-like website in which people could contribute their knowledge of historical bus (and train) routes and service patterns, and vehicle types (or rolling stock) operating them?

It would be a big job, of course, and would probably need to be a team effort, but I get the impression there are a lot of people on here who have detailed knowledge of previous service patterns and vehicle types (for buses, Alder Valley Hindhead Depot 1984-1989 is my particular speciality), so would be good to put all of that in one place via a searchable web application.

Or, alternatively, approach the developer of Timetable World to see if he is willing to add a section for detailed operating information (particularly if one or more of us volunteer to help out with the development)?

The issue I've seen from the main Wikipedia website is that people add information and then somebody comes along and deletes it all without reason or discussion. If there was a way to avoid that then that would be ideal.

Back to Lothian: I seem to remember the B7RLEs operating on the service 2 before covid, does anyone know they year they stopped, whether a particular batch or group of vehicles tended to be used, and what other routes the B7RLEs were used on? Thanks.

Some old ones in Yorkshire.
Harrogate Bus Company 36 is largely the same as West Yorkshire Road Car 36 thats in the 1936 timetable. Leeds - Ripon.
Same as the 24 Harrogate- Pateley Bridge.

In Leeds the 91 is the old Leeds City Transport 44 dating back to 1937 (when Leeds got bus route numbers)
The 1 is the old 1 tram route out to Lawnswood. And the 2 is largely the old 2 tram which did Chapletown Rd to Moortown and on to Roundhay. Leeds tram route numbers were complicated but thats for another thread.
The current Leeds 50 is similar to the 50 from LCT (Leeds City Transport) days, running via Burley Rd to Horsforth . As is the 52 Meanwood- Morley. The 72 to Bradford is another route that was running in 1937.

Poat WW1,the West Riding Tramway built a tram line from Wakefield to Thwaite Gate on the Leeds boundary. Eventually they got running powers to run through to Leeds Corn Exchange.
West Riding wanted to run buses so created subsidiary West Riding Automobiles.
In 1929 the tramway was abandoned and the tram company ran buses from Leeds Corn Exchange to Rothwell and Wakefield. Services 10, 18 & 19
The 'tramway' buses were painted red while the automobile company buses were green.
In the '50's the Corn Exchange was congested so the tramway built a little bus station on the corner of York Street and Cross York St on the site of St James' Church. Where the Co-op is today. The automobile company buses used the 'Central Bus Station' from when it was built in 1938.
I remember the red buses, Wulfs (Guy Wulfrunians) and Atlanteans, in Cross York St late 60's
Some time in the late 60's the separate fleets were amalgamated (probably when West Riding was bought out by the National Bus Company) and the tramway buses went from central bus station and became green.
West Yorkshire Metro renumbering in the mid 1970's saw the 10 Leeds - Wakefield - Kettlethorpe becoming the 110.
The Arriva 110 still runs on basically the same route today.

The 6 was cut on the 29th March 2020, as part of a wave of service changes. The withdrawal was announced and planned before the country went into COVID lockdown so this wasn't the reason, simply just low passenger numbers I believe.

Service 15 was cut to run between Penicuik and Waterloo Place on the 14th July 2019 - it previously ran between Lochend and Penicuik. It was suspended at the start of the first COVID lockdown in 2020, I'm not sure what date that was unfortunately. Services recommenced on the 13th September 2020, though only between Waterloo Place and Easter Bush, and it's remained that way ever since.
