Good afternoon everyone. I am interested in my local station the Hull Paragon and have been commissioned by Pen & Sword publishers to write a book about it's history, covering when it was first built to the Royal Hotel next to it to the social history of the people who worked on the platforms and trains.
My Great great grandfather William Dobney was a Railway a Guard on the NER and a Ticket Collector at Hull Paragon, his son John also worked at the station and my grandmother his granddaughter is supposed to have worked there in the early 1920s as a typist, though I haven't confirmed that yet.
I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who worked at Paragon station in the twentieth century in any role, or any memories, photographs that anyone would be willing to share with me - I will credit any that I use in the book.
Am also interested in the local stations around Hull, e.g. Victoria Dock, Botantic, Boothferry Halt, Wilmington, Southcoates, Beverley Road, Stepney, Sculcoates and Marfleet. Some were NER and others were Hull & Barnsley, Hull & Holderness.
I am also trying to put together a definitive list of all the Stations Masters, ASMs, Relief Station Masters who worked at Hull Pargaon - have got some info from the National Archives in their RAIL section and have another visit there in March.
Have been doing a bit of research on the number of Porters working at Hull Stations and in all the stations Passenger & Goods porters there were 592 on the National Census in 1911. I am a bit of a statistics nerd, so love collecting info like that.
Anyway, sorry for a long first post.
All best
Carol
