The Hornby 1999 model cl 43 I have is jerky and will not run slow, despite the pick ups being all 100% fine. It utilises one of those 3 pole motors and was wondering if this model was ever fitted with a 5 pole for the better slow speed running (got a cl47 with 5 pole - runs slowly fine). On Ebay I've seen a 5 pole armature and was wondering can you prise off the brass pinion on my motor unit and fit this instead? What I've noticed with any of these ringfield type motors is that half the problem with jerkiness / poor slow speed is the large commutator size where the brushes are pushing hard against it making for a high friction spinning unit. If you've ever seen inside one of those DC cassette player drive motors the commutator is small and with gently sprung copper wiper brushes. When a motor like this is powered up it starts to spin smoothly and if you disconnect it, it does not instantly grind to a halt, as the armature has some momentum with no large brushes to stop it wanting to turn. If this type of motor had been used on model trains they would run super smooth.
