There are vents on the exterior for these fans, and I presume these power the adjustable eyeball vents on the interior.

I’ve always wondered how these fans are controlled. Is it automatic, are there controls in the cab? Can individual fans be turned on and off, can the speed be adjusted manually?

I ask because it’s always the case that some are on full, some are at a speed in between, and others are off. You’d think in weather like this they’d all be on full speed. That being said I don’t know that they make much difference. Either way I like how they sound.

Don't know the units in enough detail, but I'd wager it's just a case of which fans are broken / which ones the ducts have blocked up through debris - and that they're a massive pain to repair, so they don't get done outside of overhaul...

I enjoyed a nice blast of air this week as the train was sat in Cannon Street, so the fans were working fine on that unit!

I wonder why these (and the 365s) were the only trains ever to have this feature (which is universal on coaches).
Going back into the depths of my brain. IIRC they were an new NSE requirement for the Networker build which MetCam basically ignored. The 365s had them as the next build and had basically the same construction as 465s. After that was the long privatisation hiatus which resulted in aircon/climate control for almost everything that followed.

Interesting, thanks. Also odd that 165s don’t have them.
