Does anyone know how i can view train timetables for other countries online? I have looked on various websites of all different train operators in different countries and all i can ever find are journey planners (some of them are called timetables but are actually journey planners). In the UK you can go on to the TOCs website and click on timetables and then download the timetables (usually in PDF) which shows all services and all calling points etc which is what i am looking for in other countries. I have looked at Germany / Austria / Poland / Lithuania / Latvia / Estonia / Russia / Belarus and many other countries and the one and only country where i can find proper timetables is Estonia. Does anyone know any websites or how i can view timetables for other countries. Many thanks.

It can be done with a bit of click through on the operator websites; here's one direction for the RER Line A:

http://www.ratp.fr/informer/pdf/orienter/f_horaire.php?nompdf=a_jo_sgp&loc=horaires

And here's one for SNCF:

http://cdn.ter.sncf.com/medias/PDF/...ia_13_Dec_2015_V2_tcm65-64437_tcm65-64436.pdf

The SNCF one is interesting. How do you find the 'home' page? I seem to get messages about not being authorised to access the file if I search for anything other than the extract you have given. I am interested in the lines from St Lazare to Cherbourg and Le Havre. Thanks

You might try these:

Germany: http://kursbuch.bahn.de/hafas/kbview.exe/dn?rt=1&mainframe=search

Austria: https://www.oebb.at/en/strecken-fahrplaninfos/fahrplanbilder

Switzerland: https://www.sbb.ch/fahrplan/gedruckte-fahrplaene/kursbuch.html

Poland: https://portalpasazera.pl/Tablice

Czecho: https://www.cd.cz/vnitrostatni-cestovani/jizdni-rad/jizdni-rad-ke-stazeni-zdarma/-8303/

Italy: http://www.trenitalia.com/cms-file/...ioni/orario_digitale/Tuttitalia_light0707.pdf
The whole lot, like the complete NR book.

Sometimes you get an index of individual routes rather than the full thing.
Sometimes you have put in a route to get the appropriate tables listed.
Also it is sometimes the infrastructure owner which publishes the full timetable (as with NR for GB) rather than the operator.

This site has some good links to operators' sites: http://egtre.info/wiki/Main_Page
Go to a country section, then General Information and Downloadable Timetable.

For Finland (and services to Russia):

https://www.vr.fi/cs/vr/en/long-distance_timetables
https://www.vr.fi/cs/vr/en/commuter_service_timetables
https://www.vr.fi/cs/vr/en/night_and_car-carrier_train_timetables
https://www.vr.fi/cs/vr/en/russian_timetables

And if you need live information for any train, station, track section etc check out: http://julia.dy.fi/timetables (via Google Translate, unless you fancy some Finnish practice). For this page "numero tai liikennepaikka" means train number or "traffic place" (usually just enter a station name) and click on the button marked "Etsi" (search),

eg: enter, say, Rovaniemi for the station and you'll get a list of all passenger, traffic, museum, engineering etc trains for the given day, eg: http://julia.dy.fi/timetables?s=Rovaniemi&d=23.10.2016

Please read, @ Groningen. TS was asking for timetables to download, not for the actual departure times.

Thank you everyone for your help. Those links are brilliant. I havent been able to find anything like these. I personally find these timetables much easier to use to plan journeys than journey planners.

I will certainly be making use of the German and Polish timetables and probably most of the others. That Lithuanian timetable (on that German site) is especially interesting as it includes seating plans of all the different types of trains and lots of other information. The Estonian ones are useful as well. Its a shame that Latvia no longer seems to produce timetables online (other than for international trains) as i travel there quite a lot. Does anyone know any other links for Latvian timetables?

Also out of interest do all countries print paper timetables at stations? It seems to vary when i visit other countries. Some are excellent but in others you cant seem to find any.

To add to my earlier post regarding French rail services...

When searching the SNCF website, select "Se Deplacer" from the left hand menu, and you're given four choices. For TER services & SNCF services within the Ile-de France (Paris Area), select "En region"

For "Classic" Inter City services, select "En France", then "En Train Classique". Unfortunately, even the SNCF website doesn't yield full timetables to TGV services.

The regional services are grouped into their respective geographical areas within France, so it helps if you're familiar with the geography of France in that respect.

To add to those already givej, there is an extensive list, if you can manage a short intro in German, at
http://www.drehscheibe-online.de/foren/read.php?30,7218041.

Updated twice yearly.

This list is the best one AFAIK, along with the Fahrplancenter one it covers just about the whole subject.

Just shows the value of forums like this. You thought there were none, and in fact you have found out that nearly all railways now have some sort of 'PDF timetable' facility!

Also out of interest do all countries print paper timetables at stations? It seems to vary when i visit other countries. Some are excellent but in others you cant seem to find any.

Most developed countries' railways have paper sheets posted, certainly in Europe, but of course it is less necessary now that VT screens are the norm.

But still most major railway countries still do both (for now!)

The convention is yellow for departure sheets and white for arrival sheets (less common perhaps than departures).

Switzerland has for many years also produced scaled down versions of the wall posters as paper hand leaflets.

As well as the arrivals and departures you can still find the actual timetable pages posted up - I've seen them on long drum-like rollers in CZ and SK (and vaguely recall Austria used to have them years ago). ISTR wall posters like that on BR, but only the tables relevant to the station.

The drum roller type timetables are IMHO a -'victorian' age railway thing. At one time, many countries had them. I suspect that their existence in CZ and SK was due to the eastern bloc legacy, as I remember them in the DDR long after they had disappeared in the BRD.

ps worth noting that the Swiss have just announced the demise of their printed Kursbuch
