I wasnt aware we got any reduced rate on the underground.
You do as safeguarded staff, otherwise no.

That's how I'd understand it. If you have an Oyster card you might be better off getting the discount enabled on that, though I'm not sure how you'd get that done.

I don't have an Oyster card, in non-covid times would only go to London and use Tube once/twice a year so would not use Oyster card enough
so its pop into Kings Cross Ticket office then

The document for non- safeguarded staff says this-

Section 9: Travel in London
There is no eligibility for free or reduced rate travel on TfLs’ London
Underground, Dockland Light Railway, bus and river services.
National Rail Services in the Oyster area

You can use your Rail Staff Leisure Card to travel at Priv-rate either by
purchasing a paper ticket or using an Oyster card.
If you want to travel using Priv-rate on an Oyster card, take your Rail Staff
Leisure Card to one of the following National Rail stations. A member of
staff will be able to set the NR only Priv discount on your Oyster card using
a Ticket Vending Machine. Your Oyster card must be registered before staff
can set the discount.

Of course a possible dumb question would be. For the sake of Kings Cross to Paddington, is it worth the hassle and time of a a ticket office for the insignificant absolute saving cost?

You need to get an Oystercard and apply to RSTL for the discount, then take your Oystercard and the application to an Underground station for staff to load the discount onto your Oystercard.
You will need to renew the discount each year (although you only need to go through the application process once)

Fine for those who are in London on a regular basis, but far too much hassle if you only visit once or twice a year.

Once done it's sorted. I've been on a priv oyster since 2011 even though some years I don't go near the place.

For ease of use, personally, I'd recommend it. (Can also be used on buses, though without the priv discount obviously)

I'll only use the Oyster card once or twice a year so not sure getting a Oyster card would save me much

going from Newark to Chippenham return

Are you getting free travel on part of that? Otherwise buy a through ticket which includes your underground transfer.

Priv will save you £1 each way compared to using contactless at public rates. Whilst I'm a great believer in every penny counting there has to be a question as to whether it's worth the effort. It's more worthwhile getting the Priv discount on Oyster, even if you don't use it very often

A priv return from Finsbury Park to Acton Main Line may save you a quid (every penny's a prisoner oop north). Get Newark BO to issue it to you prior to travel.

Seemingly the priv oyster fare is 85p.

Newark booking office could equally issue the cheaper Zone 1 single with a prov discount.

I can confirm that privilege tickets for LU can be purchased from any National Rail station ticket office.
Some ticket offices may be reluctant/can't be bothered/do not know how to do it. For example I have purchased a LU zone 1 priv ticket from Torquay ticket office but conversely the ticket office at Sevenoaks refused to do it.
I will agree reb0118 above that if you buy a priv ticket across London it should include travel on LU.
