Sorry if this has been asked before but does anybody know how to get a job as a member of station/platform staff (pref with London Midland)

Probably best to keep an eye on the TOC's vacancies page. It also helps if you know the right people.

I hate to shatter your dreams but all I can say is wait for it to appear on the website, when I applied for platform staff when it came up, it was 11 months before I was even contacted, and in the Midland's it's been cuts cuts cuts, and very little new intake of staff.

You never know your luck, just keep checking the website.

Watch the local TOC sites like a hawk, and seeing as you're in birmingham, looking on Network Rail's career website would be worth it.

Make sure you have extensive customer service experience though. This is often one of the first things TOCs are looking for. You will also need to be able to demonstrate varrious competencies (for example teamwork) with specific examples from your experience.
