We have found a small cast iron plate in an outhouse that is being demolished. The inscription on it says

"Genly repaired. Cowlairs 1951".

We have ascertained that Cowlairs was a locomotive works in Glasgow and that we have a wagon repair plate....but we cannot find out what the term "Genly" means. Can anyone on this forum put us out of our misery by telling us what it stands for please?

"General repair" means a thorough refurb of the wagon - maybe even rebodying - as opposed to a quick check over the mechanical parts. ( a fitness to run in todays language)
