It does seem helpful of them to consult then public about changes they want.

I am going to Dublin on holiday later in the year. I understand there is a 7-day ticket valid at least on Dublin Bus and local trains. Does anyone know of a book on Irish rolling stock similar to the British ones?

Sounds nice, but will it make much difference?

THe UK Government loves the committees/ focus groups/ stakeholders to give the impression that they are consulting with people, but often as a "box ticking" exercise (allowing people to feel important), then doing what they wanted to do anyway.

For example, have any petitions on the Number Ten website ever changed anything (that wasn't going to change anyway)? Or just given some people the illusion that they were being listened to?

Platform 5 used to publish a book called Irish Railways Traction and Travel that had details of all IR and NIR stock, plus loco diagrams and mileage tables. There was an updated version every couple of years. You could start by seeing if that's still on the go.

You could start by looking at the fleet pages of Irish Rail's website which has pictures, however it appears that it hasn't been updated for a while, as it still shows mk3s, 141 & 181 locos still been in service when they are now withdrawn, and 32x 201s been in traffic when there is only approx 20.

The link is http://www.irishrail.ie/fleet_information/intercity_fleet.asp

Fellow Rail Forums members the Wanderer and Csaelm both have very good and comprehensive websites giving unrivaled coverage of the current rail scene in Ireland.

Agreed, and in the case of rail timetables, a lot of passenger groups will campaign for things that are completely undeliverable.

Yes, they still start at Connolly and travel on the "loop" line over the Liffey, past Tara St. station and into Pearse station. The Rosslare route is still a lovely line to travel on, at least the new 22000s are decent enough units, better than the crap commuter trains they had up to 2009.

I prefer though to wait until the Summer time and travel on one of the RPSI steam specials and appreciate the line at its best on a real train.

As part of the Irish govt's consultation, will you be asking them to bring back loco-haulage on on Rosslare line Drimnagh Road? Lease the preserved 121s and 141s and the RPSI Cravens rake? Suitably repainted in orange and black of course. Might be worth it: Brian Cowen probably feels as though he can promise anything today and not be held accountable for it!

Ah yes the loop line, over the liffey then over the "top" past Tara station to Pearse. Used this route for the ferries many times.
