Is a Ryde-Kempton Park ticket valid via Waterloo?

I am travelling on Saturday 31st inst from Ryde Esplanade to either Kempton Park or Shepperton on a Day Return with a Senior Railcard using Wightlink. Is my ticket valid to go in to Waterloo, or must I change at either New Malden, Wimbledon or Clapham Junction? (I still can’t get the Routeing Guide to work.)

This is definitely allowed to Sunningdale on a ticket routed Any Permitted + Wightlink, as you can use routeing points of Portsmouth Group and Staines, for which LONDON is a permitted route, which allows travel to Waterloo. When a route is permitted as such you can pass through the same stations on either side of London, without it being a double back.

Kempton Park is more tricky, as no routeing points pass the fare check, as there were no fares for it in NFM64. Therefore only the shortest route (+3 miles) is valid I believe (Or a direct train, but that is not applicable in this situation obviously), which is not via Waterloo.

It is valid via Waterloo. Easiest to just look at the journey from Portsmouth to Kempton Park/Shepperton.

National Rail does give a journey and a price from Portsmouth Harbour to Kempton Park, but I understand that the system sometimes offers journeys that aren’t valid if they are the quickest. (Portsmouth Harbour used because of the connection times at both Ryde and Portsmouth being lengthier than necessary.)

You are actually correct, it seems the routeing point calculator was having a moment last night, as it was telling me it couldn’t find NFM64 fares, but it seems now it can. Using the Portsmouth Group and either routeing point of Twickenham or Kingston it is mapped via LONDON, so yes is valid via Waterloo.

However while it might be ‘easier’ to use Portsmouth, unless you’re buying your ticket from there that just isn’t how it works. To use Portsmouth it needs to pass the fare check.

Thanks. I have done a search from Ryde Esplanade to both Kempton Park and Shepperton, and it does give both a fare and a route via Waterloo, but half an hour later from Portsmouth.
